Highest iOS in Original iPad without Jailbreaking

I would want an iPad Air 2 but what I have is a first gen iPad. For security more than anything else, I would like to update from iOS 5.1.1 to at least 6 but 7 would be preferred as there are apps that need iOS 7 and old ones are not available without the jailbreak. I know that there are several ways to get around Apple's restrictions on what Mac can take what version of OS X; is there such a thing for the iPad?

Also, real world battery life, how long and when would you (or have you) change yours

The 1st gen iPad only supports up to iOS 5.

Yes, 5.1.1 is the last version of iOS on the original and it struggles running it.
