What's the highest I can go practically on an older Mac Mini 2007 2,1 (Core 2 Duo)? It came stock with a 2GB DDR2 RAM and a 120 GB hard drive. I had shelved it due a move to another office and never really reconnected for several years. Last night, I fired it up to see if it still had some life or if it was going to go for e-recycling. It started just like it always did (unlike some of my old Windows devices that don't age well), and so I upgraded it to Snow Leopard (still had an install disk lying around), and it's now at OS X 10.6.8. It runs surprisingly well still, and I have some extra RAM to up it to 4GB and can put in an SSD if its warranted...

... but I thought I could upgrade it to El Capitan, but I think that was with some other devices. The charts I saw state that this Mac Mini is an effective dead end with 10.6.8. I saw a video where someone managed to get it up to Yosemite but reported bugs.

Any way to move the OS up more and still maintain functionality, or have I really reached the end?

The highest it can go without losing graphics acceleration is OS X Mountain Lion using MLPostFactor. More RAM and an SSD would help with performance on Mountain Lion for sure.
