I'd return it to the shareholders by increasing the value of the company over time through investment, not giving it out. As someone said, Apple could use better factories. I don't think the stock is undervalued anymore, and it shouldn't need a buyback.

----------

Apple should buy iCahn Enterprises and dump it into the Atlantic just to show that greedy Santa who's in charge of Apple.

You realize that Icahn's shares are part of Apple, right? But only 1%. If he gets outvoted, he can't do anything.

----------

Icahn is an idiot. Anybody remember the days of John Sculley? ..........

Let's not cause that crap again.

He's no idiot. You're talking about one of the most successful investors ever. He just has no reason to look out for the good of AAPL long-term since he'll probably sell short-term, so I wouldn't trust what he says unless he has a good argument for it.

Icahn only interested in $$$$. Problem is that the funds will have the majority vote on this proposal and not the little guy. Do the funds really care about Apple or $$$$$

"This dynamic competitive landscape and the Company’s rapid pace of innovation require unprecedented investment, flexibility and access to resources."

This quote sounds good, i don't want money returned to me as an investor, its time they do some 'unprecedented investment'. Do something with that money, buy Philips or Nest, there's lots of tech markets that need the Apple-touch.

Phillips would be a good aquisition.

Apple needs to stay in a position to purchase great companies to further their products... This $50b is pure greed and damages companies.

Hopefully investors will realise, Apple is working on great stuff compared to it's competitors and they as a company are still growing.

Funny, I get banned for calling someone stupid when they bought a iPhone 5c when they already had a iPhone 5s but the people here can mock an individual based on how they look. Disgusting!

This comment serves no purpose except to celebrate Ichan's "40 Year Old Virgin" headshot.

Part of Philips anyway, there's a huge market for network conncted lamps and other small electrical devices. The only absence is 1 network to rule them all and Apple should be that network for devices with the iPhone in it's center.

Phillips has lots of well designed electrical products, always rated them very highly.

As for network, iCloud really has potential, it just needs like 5 times the investment.

opps...maybe this is in more in keeping with the overall theme of shadowing Carl the Ichan: however, it does seem highly unlikely that the "2014" Apple Shareholder Meeting will take place on February 28, "2013"...'course, it might well be that the reversal of time is exactly what Ichan wishes to accomplish...hmmm....:)

I would rather Apple paid its retails staff a decent wage an give them a christmas/or profit related bonus.

Icahn should just shut up. He only wants a buy back so HIS shares will increase in value. At which point he dumps them. So why do ANYTHING to appease this guy?
What will he do if Apple doesn't heed his advice? Dump his shares?
Apple isn't fixated on stock market opinion of it's profile like some companies are. They actually behave more like an old style industrial corporation that is focused on products, IP and suppliers. Not Market cap, stock valuation and all that. Though they are actually better at the latter than most companies.

Interesting that such people are now interested in Apple. They probably didn't dare under the aegis of Steve.

Yes, you can flame me now for the "with Steve such things would never have happened" attitude, but Apple's current management must have been (and probably still is) perceived as (significantly) weaker in comparison to Steve.

Otherwise people like Icahn wouldn't waste their precious time on Apple, but instead try to make money on easier targets.

I agree but i don't have a problem with a more human Apple, it's just that people like Icahn take away to much precious time from the board, they're slowing Apple down.
