Historic availability in-store pickup after launch day

If I ordered now, the ship date is mid-October. With past Watch launches, has the in-store pickup availability usually been available relatively soon after launch, or am I better off just ordering it for shipment?

I think it may be a delta of a few days between shipping and pickup. I think pickup would be faster.
