Is that the WD 7200 RPM one? If so, could you post benchmark results? I'm curious as to the XBench results for it.

No - mine's the same as the OPs... Hitachi 320GB. The benchmark is just about exactly what he has for it. 10.6.2 here too on MBP5.1.

I hear ya. Im the same way. For me battery life is number 1 on my list. As I just posted in the Hitachi HDD thread, i just got mine in and im currently charging so ill post up my estimated battery life with the disk mounted and unmounted.

As for the audible level of the Hitachi, Mine is literally silent. I just got it in and transferred 51.XX gigs of music on it from a WD 1 TB drive and it took 18 minutes Via USB and I never herd the disk spin up which is really weird.

hmmm... That's how I would describe the stock 160GB Hitachi in my uMBP. I might have to give the 7K500 a shot... I didn't have time to make it to Fry's to exchange the WD today. Plus, I wanted to make absolutely sure it was the WD that was making the noise, and that I had it mounted correctly before returning it.

Does anyone have an Xbench result of the Western Digital Scorpio Black 320GB for comparison?

I'm still stuck with my pitiful default Hitachi 250 5400 drive.

I'm thinking of either the WD Scorpio Blue 500Gb, or this Travelstar 7k500, but im mostly worried about power consumption..
In the reviews i've read about the WD it uses up to 2.5W in read/write mode, whereas the Travelstar SPECS say it only uses 1.8 in read/write, but it just seems weird if a 7200RPM would use less power than a 5400?
To anyone who installed this, what's your battery times before/after?

Received my new Hitachi Travelstar 500gb/7200rpm hdd, yesterday. Transferring data from the stock drive to the new, at this moment. Unfortunately, I don't have the torx 6 driver on hand. I ordered one from OWC. Hopefully, it will be here this afternoon.

With all due respect to those who like it, I simply won't use deathstars any more.

This post refers to the "Travelstars" 2.5 inch drives. The series you call "Deathstars" was a series of Hitachi/IBM 3.5" drives that had serious problems:eek:, many years ago. The present 3.5" drives do not have any similar issues. If you are stubborn enough to refuse to use a brand that has experienced a failure in design or production in the past, then you cut out Hitachi, Seagate, Western Digital and maybe others as well. The important thing is the reliability, performance, vibration, heat and other factors that a series has now, and how those factors fit the computer you plan to install the drive in.

I own the Seagate 7400.4, 500 and never could use it in my MBP because it vibrated so badly. I replaced it with the WD Scorpio Blue 5400 RPM 500, and have loved it.

Today I bought the Hitachi Travelstar 7K500, and cannot believe it so far how nice it is. Zero vibration, noise, and it is fast. I am going to benchmark it, but so far it has shown me my Seagate must be defective. Could not be happier with this purchase.

I will use my WD as a backup drive, and the Seagate as a third backup.

I second your comments. The Hitachi is sooo smooth and quiet. It produces less heat than the original 320gb, as well.

I am pleased that I passed on the Seagate and waited for this one. :D

What's your impressions on battery life on the Hitachi Travelstar vs WD scorpio blue?
And anyone else who has the Travelstar? I can't decide which to buy, and speed is not my primary concern, my boot drive will be an intel SSD, so i just need a second drive that's big, low power, and quiet..

I should pick up one of these HD's(maybe two) since I've wanted to replace the internal drive when I found out that it was a Seagate. I really like the write speed, and Hitachi drives have a reputation for being the fastest which makes me want one even more :O

BTW, I have a 320GB Scorpio Black as an external HD and it writes faster connected by eSATA than my internal drive =/

Does anyone know if the WD Black line has a 500GB drive in the works? My MBP is almost always plugged in, so battery life means almost nothing to me. I just want the highest performing 2.5" drive (that isn't an SSD, because those are still way too expensive).

check out this report on 2.5" drives, quite interesting as the 7200 don't necessarily out perform their 5400 counterparts especially when you consider battery life

I have had the WD 500 blue in both my wife and my own MBP and very happy with the speed/performance/price ratio. Now I am not considering SSD anymore till the technology matures.

Hope that helps!

Where can you get this drive for less than 100 everywhere I look its always 100+. On newegg its 120, and I cant seem to find it on Fry's I just don't know where else to look. The first post says that you can get it for 79.99 from the egg, and that fry's has it but that link brings you to a failed search and fry's doesn't seem to have it anyway.

It was on sale I guess for a short while until they ran out of stock, now I guess its back to normal pricing. Really glad I got it now when it was at 79.99.

That report has four 5400 RMP drives and only one 7200 RPM drive, which is a Seagate drive. It doesn't even have the WD Black 320GB that I spoke of, which (so far that I can find) is the fastest 2.5" non-SSD drive available to date.

But I totallly agree with you on SSD's. They are the future, and that future is coming closer (a 64GB SSD last year was like $500-$700, and today you can get a 256GB drive for the same price), but the tech still has to mature a bit.
