Hey,
I got my Macbook Pro replaced by Apple with the current Gen 15" 2.66, and they upgraded the drive for free, so I wanted the 7200 drive. Apple puts in the Seagate. It is most definitely faster, and seems to cut the battery a little bit (obviously never had it without the drive, but if I have the screen on much, its about 4 hours). One thing I do notice is if I have the drive on a hard surface, you can definitely notice the vibrations from the drive. But is is way fast, so I don't mind it at all. I have some seagate and western digitals drives (external...and I am very happy with them.
I have the Low power 1tb which is 5900rpm. I know odd speed, but it is was faster than the samsung low power 1.5tb I have.
Then I have two 7200rpm drives in the g5 which work great. I have a western digital portable 1tb drive and its great to have all that storage with a usb powered drive, but if I touch it at all is disconnects, which really bothers me.
(the two externals I have are iomega from radio shack. 100 for a 1tb seagate drive with an enclosure is pretty cheap.)

7K500 ? or 7k200 ? So shall I just go with Hitachi then? And if I do so, what is the best inclosure to handle my current HD with either USB 2.0 or Firewire support?

Thanks,

I've bought a couple of drive and enclosure kits from Other World Computing in the past year. They sell an empty enclosure + the new drive + some software for cloning your current drive as a kit. Free third party software is also available (Carbon Copy Cloner, for example).

Here is a link to their Hitachi page:

I put a 7200k 320GB Seagate SATA drive in my wife's older MB Pro. It works great, no noise or vibration issues. I've never done a speed test so can't comment on that.

Let us know what you decide. I'm looking for a new 500GB for my 2008 MB Pro.

Cheers

Seagate v Scorpio Black

I have both 320 GB Scorpio Black (7200rpm) in one 15" MBP and the 500 GB Momentus (7200rpm) in another 15" MBP (both early 2008); I notice no difference in speed in either photoshop or database use. I have had no problems with noise or vibration, but these are not in unibody machines so that may be the difference with others experience.

Thanks,

The model is Hitachi travelstar 7k500 -- the same one you listed. I think you'd be happy with the 7K500 and probably the WD as well. As for enclosures, I would follow the advice and go to OWC at macsales.com. They have high quality enclosures with good chipsets inside. Highly recommended.

Good luck
