new hotline client and server versions for classic and X.

now with spyware-- i waited for an update for years and i get this crap. looks like development was taken over by another company. (?) the place that used to be taken up by server banners is now taken up with banner ads.

id stick with 1.8.5, but only if you're really HL faithful. KDX really is the best client/server for mac in my experienced opinion.

list of changes:

* Flat or threaded news
* ban by IP#
* expanded file preview
* useability enhancements
* bugfixes
* online help

i really prefer kdx

hotline is the worst sharing community ever, and carracho is getting almost as bad...too many completely private servers and jerk-offs running them with no decency. granted a few of them are nice, but most are jerks...some even make you PAY for an account...imagine that...paying for pirated software/music/movies...

if you are gonna pirate...do it right

kdx is still in the beginning stages and most servers are run by people who actually care about what is going on and realize how great free sharing can be...some require uploads for accounts, and that's pretty acceptable by my standards

as a general rule, the older the sharing community, the more closed servers and dick admins there are.

kdx is virgin territory right now. its the community that makes the experience, not the software (they all pretty much do the same things).

I long for the day when mac file trading is all done via limewire or more to point, something that doesn't revolve around server and client software so the moron factor is removed from it once and for all.

I haven't been using Hotline above version 1.2.3, since that was the last "good" build of it. All higher versions sucked because of the ugly banner ads. Also, this may be interesting to read so you all realize what happened with the original developer of Hotline.

Luckily I nowadays use KDX, which is indeed a fresh and generous community. Although, I already see stuff happening here like on Hotline/Carracho: servers going private because there are too many users and too little (good, fast, guest-friendly) servers. I think this will happen to every "community-based" file trading network which gets reasonably popular.
I'm not pessimistic though, since you can download a great number of "Hotline clones" on VivaHX if this new official version of hotline doesn't appeal to you.

do cmd-k to bring up the connect window. change the radio button to tracker. type in kdxtracker.shacknet.nu

no login or pass.

tracker-tracker is just 4 carracho and HL

I find that good friends is the best p2p networking system in the world.
Hotline is over with. Carracho is a great app, desperately in need of a core overhaul for os x. But it the communities there seem to be much more relaxed, but there are dumb everywhere on every network.
go mldonkey!
