I am a hoarder- simply because the search function is so useful in Mail that I like to have every email in one box, so I can find anything, from any time, instantly. I move old messages to another box after a year passes.

Just a note to the hoarders- Panther mail has a treshold of about a Gb per mbox. This means that after an mbox hits that point, it can start going haywire, losing messages, forcing rebuilds, etc. I have heard that the Tiger limit is 2Gb, but I don't quite understand that one because they're broken down into .emix files, whatever those are.

A hoarder and a bad mail checker.

My home email currently has 267 "new" messages (which have gathered over 2-3 years). Most are listserv messages I just didn't read, but once in a while, I just ignore an email. And it winds up lost somewhere in a pile of emails I don't delete.

And if you think that's bad, you should see my closet ...

I currently have 10 messages in my home inbox.

I try to keep my work inbox as clean as possible. As soon as I'm done with a message, it's off to the trash. I keep about a month or two of deleted e-mails before I permanently delete them. I don't understand how my coworkers keep hundreds or thousands of messages in their boxes.

i think i understand the situation of hoarders (those that keep emails for archive purposes and NOT those that are simply to lazy to delete let us say, spam mails that doesn't get filtered).

i am practically a deleter.

my question is, how futureproof is mail? i believe i could archive a folder in the library folder, where my emails are. but how am i sure, i could still open them 10 years later.

any opinion on this?

I'm one of those who keeps most of my emails (spam notwithstanding), but I use Mail's Smart Mailboxes – coupled with Spotlight – to help keep everything organised.

My email organisation levels are also helped by the fact that I don't actually receive that much of them...

Nice thread revive.
I keep all emails sent to me by people that i know but i delete all junk.

I delete the spam and the MR post reports :)p) but hoard everything else. There are 2668 messages in my inbox.

we sure gotta a lot of hoarders (not that its a problem :D ).

I myself am a deleter. i dont like a lot of clutter in my room, so i guess its the same with my inbox. its gets kinda bad cuz i'd accidentally delete emails when i'm at work, then i end up now knowing whats going on.:D but im learning.
