Software updates are overrated. People have been using Windows 10 for 10 years and it still works fine. Even Windows 7 is 15 years old and people still use it. Don’t feel like you need to upgrade every year just because Apple pushes it out 💩

Due to how some people frame it, it is oftentimes made to sound as if not updating were a capital offence.

I remember in 2015 or so connecting a Windows XP computer to the internet started a clock on Time to Pwn. Didn't matter what you installed or where you went, that computer was compromised the moment it got online. Ten years later, I am just going to assume the same is true for Vista, 7, and 8. 10 has been kept up-to-date relatively well, but there is no reason to keep using it if your hardware supports 11. Of course, I would rather throw Linux on that old PC and just be secure.

Yes, I know, everyone says you’ll get hacked as soon as you connect an obsolete OS to the internet. Maybe over public wifi. Has never happened to me and I’ve been using legacy systems for a long time. Common sense goes a long way. Anyone can be hacked if they click on links and download files of a questionable origin that they shouldn’t. Windows 11 and MacOS have vulnerabilities that have not been discovered or patched. For years Microsoft has trumpeted that their newest Windows is “the most secure version”. It’s impossible to be 100% secure.

That's complete bulls4it and fear mongering! Starting up Windows XP, Vista, 7, or 8.x behind a normal Fritz!Box or some similar router/firewall is absolutely no problem. 👍

Nobody goes online with a DSL-USB-Modem directly connected to Windows kernel anymore! The real problem is, you can't get a recent secure browser for those systems to go online securely! ‼️

Don’t believe me if you like. I was there. Clean install of XP. You could literally see the mouse moving of its own accord and DOS windows opening and closing about 2 hours after going online. IE would be filled with all kinds of weird toolbars you never asked for. The system was compromised before you could get your security updates installed.

I just switched back to iOS 18 and it’s like a breath of fresh air.

So much nicer and cleaner looking.

The whole glass thing is hideous.

I have an old MSI NETbook with Windows XP and Winamp as MP3/Net-Player with external Philips DAC in my stereo system for years. This is connected to the internet over WiFi via my Fritz!Box. Never had any problems with this setup and how should anyone from outside (behind the Fritz!Box) ever reach my NETbook, when there are no open ports in the Fritz!Box?

Clean install of XP.
Are we talking about Windows XP without any Service Pack? Service Pack 2 improved the security of Windows XP while Service Pack 3 includes some security features backported from Windows Vista.

Supermium is a browser based on Chromium that still supports Windows XP and newer.
