Holding down the delete key

Hi All,
I'm wondering if there is any way to delete text quickly by holding down the delete key. This is one of the few frustrating things I have with OS X. Even when I use bootcamp and log on to windows I can open up word and then if I need to erase an entire sentence I can hold down the delete key and the cursor will delete things pretty quickly. I've noticed the same thing with the left and right arrow key. I know that I can use the apple key to erase full words and sometimes I use it but it be really nice to be able to just hold down the delete key. Is there any way to do this?😕

I thought it was enabled by default, but here you go. It's in the Keyboard & Mouse preference pane.
