My personal laptop is a 16" i9, and I also have a 16" M4 Max for work. The Intel is still pretty capable, but the difference is definitely huge.

I ran a local LLM on the M4 and it was just as fast if not faster than my Linux desktop with dedicated graphics. That was the only time I ever heard fan noise from it. Impressive stuff.

Agree that the Intel is still capable, at least for my non-creative workflows, but recently I've been running up against the 16GB ram limit. Swapping was still reasonably fast, and the battery is shot, but apple offered my only $150 CAD as a trade-in to which I decided I'll keep the i9 as a backup or try installing a T2 compatible version of linux dual boot

What i do miss is the touchbar. It was really useful for accepting non conventionally spelled words in the messages app and for more fine-grained control of screen brightness as compared to the dimmer/brighter keyboard keys.

My battery life has been pretty under what i expected. I'm getting around 15% of battery use per hour with just browsing and notetaking. I've had the laptop for a week and a bit.

Got my new MBP 16" M5 Pro 18/20 64GB 2TB. Coming from a 2019 15" MBP i9.

Blown away by its performance and its battery life.

Just tested WiFi performance. 1.8 Gbps down on WiFi 7. Un-freaking-believable!

The machine just stays ... cool under pressure
Welcome to the party, pal! 😉 I have the exact same 16" M5 Pro and had both a 15" and 16" 2019 fully loaded (sold the 16") and yes, even the base M5 I tested blew away the 16" in every benchmark I ran. It even ran a couple x86 benchmarks in emulation faster than those same benchmarks natively on the 2019 16". Amazing machine.

I still have tinnitus/ghost fan noise in my right ear from having the 16" in a vertical dock in clamshell mode for the better part of 6 years lol. Now the only thing I hear is my USB Time Machine backup drive... and the tinnitus.
