My iPhone 7 Home Button stopped responding (although Touch ID works for App Store purchases) and a message showed up on screen saying “Home Button May Need Service”...

Has anyone had this issue?

Are there any fixes I can try before taking this to the Apple Store?

My phone’s old and probably out of warranty...how much does Apple usually charge to fix a haptic Home Button? This thing seems like it is sort of Apple’s fault...it just stopped working out of nowhere, no dropping it or anything.

Stuff breaks, so unless it happens in the warranty/Applecare period, Apple isn't going to pay for it. Apple does flat rate out of warranty repairs on iPhones. https://support.apple.com/iphone/repair/service#otherfees
Consequently, you'll probably find an iPhone 7 repair price is not worth what they charge for it.

that's kinda ironic- the so called reason they removed the mechanical home button as used in the past was to increase reliability
(but I bet the real reason was to save money).

Sure it's  's fault that the fake home button failed, but a one year warranty is only good for one year. Anything that breaks after that, the customer pays for the repair

I know right?

Ya I’m afraid that’s likely it...hope it is reasonable...I was planning on spending the money in my piggy bank to get a new one when they release it in Sept/Oct...not this week!

The iPhone 7 Home Button was likely designed to increase reliability related to water resistance. Doesn't mean it fail with normal use though.

Wasn't the haptic feedback thing more difficult and expensive to implement? It saves them money if they reduce warranty service for failed buttons during the 1-2 year period.

Mind, we're 50/50 on mushy mechanical buttons from iPhone 4S to 6 (often need to press twice or more to get them to respond) so I expect the 7 actually was an improvement. Iirc, I believe both our 5's had to be replaced (at different times) under warranty due to the home button.

I hope it's more reliable. That's one of the reasons why I bought an Iphone 8 rather than have the battery replaced on my 6s. However, my 6s was 2 1/2 years old and the home button was going strong.

Well—funny update:

It fixed itself! (I hope this doesn’t jynx it!..knock on wood!)

The last few days the life has mysteriously returned to the haptic home-button. I hope it stays that way!

Probably a matter of time before repeats itself or it stops working again. My guess is something is likely not connected securely to the ground plate, which is why you had intermittent issues with it not responding with the haptic touch.
