I don't think they could get rid of the home button in the sense of relying solely on touch ID. We know that it's spotty (reports say as does my wife who has a 5s) but it's also brand new for the iPhone.

I recently burned my thumb and tried to unlock her phone (my thumb is set up to do so) and it wouldn't recognize me. So if Apple did away with the physical button, I wonder how that would work?

I'm not saying it's a bad idea... just that I can see circumstances when the physical button is preferred.

Nobody is suggesting getting rid of the function of the home button, that is essential and every smartphone has it. Some of us are merely saying that the home button should become part of the touchscreen, or a capacative button. Not the big, old tech mechanical button.

NO, like others said the Home button ha become part of the iPhone branding and can't go, especially since the release of TouchID.

Even if Apple were to remove the button, how much more screen space will you really have? I dont think its worth it. If Apple were to put the Home button and TouchID on the back couldn't a lawsuit be fied against them since LG already has a home button on the back? or no?

Touch ID does NOT have to be part of the home button assembly, and nor does the home button have be a big old mechanical dinosaur.

still have protective plastic

plastic covering is still over the whole button. I use assistive TOUCH exclusively. Sleep button and onscreen home button. I LOVE it. you get used to it.

I use assistive touch too and have done since day one with my i5. The fragile mechanical home button failed on my i4 and I had to have it repaired. For a button which gets pressed hundreds of times per day, Apple really needs to throw more than a few cents at it. Ideally, get rid of it completely :)

It is the future sweet spot and standard size. So many will regret getting a 4.7".

Nope, that is just your opinion. And unfortunately (for you) its already been debunked with Galaxy series vs Note series sales figures.

Note series is technically better (in every way if I'm not mistaken) and close to your "sweet spot" however doesn't dominate in sales even when compared to a smaller phone that is extremely similar by the same manufacturer. So while its your opinion and you are entitled too it, its wrong, proven by the majority in sales with their money.

Dress accordingly, or purchase a manbag.

You've just so clearly articulated why "monster phones" will fail.
Anything over 4 needs to be something other than a phone first.
Note - sketchbook with phone being prime example.

The sweet spot for "phone with benefits" is 4 or below as the sales numbers show.

Not sure about that. I had an HTC One and it was a great phone. 4.7" screen, too.

My in Laws both have iPhones and picked up using them very quickly...my dad has an android Samsung Galaxy and i'm constantly getting asked stuff about how to do something on it.

I never said it HAS to be part of the homebutton. I also never said they have to keep it the same size. It's a big part of what the iphone is. And it doesn't need changing as it works fine and nobody really complains about it.
