Home Depot today launched new Smart Glass Door options that are able to transform from clear glass to opaque glass with a smartphone app, providing versatility for customers who want to be able to block light or people from seeing inside a home at select times of the day.

The Smart Glass Doors are made by Feather River Doors and are powered through Hubspace, a smart home app that integrates with several products sold by Home Depot, including light bulbs, ceiling fans, blinds, outlets, and locks.

The Smart Glass Doors can be controlled with an app that's available on the iPhone, but there is no HomeKit integration or support for Siri, which is a major downside for people who have a HomeKit setup. There is, however, support for Alexa and Google voice control.

When activated, the glass in the door is able to change from clear to privacy, which is a more opaque look. The glass is laminated for energy efficiency, and the door itself is made from fiberglass filled with high density polyurethane foam. It is unpainted, so it can be painted to match a home.

There are several models with different amounts of glass, with pricing that starts at $800. The doors will be available in select Home Depot stores starting on October 28.

This would be cool to have for windows mainly, with a power point nearby I guess?! Home Depot appears to be US and Canada only so not something coming soon to the EU.

Whatever happened to…just pulling the shades? 🤔

Going to be funny when the ppl that buy this freak out when it stops working in a few years.

“Honey I need a brand new door….the app no longer works!!!!”
Clearly you've never had a toddler who enjoys pulling the shades up and then throwing a huge tantrum they can't reach the shades to pull it back down. followed by you pulling the shades down, the toddler sending the back up, and starting the tantrum over again. and again. and again. and again. 😂

You can just buy a regular door and change out the glass with smart glass. Then you can do fancier stuff like tie an ups w/ solar to keep the door working.

Or spend $1000 on a turd door that someone’s going to end up having to reverse engineer

Smart home stuff isn't necessary for life, or even very interesting.

I prefer to keep my fixed home appliances and parts (doors, etc.) as long as physically possible.
Agree 100% it is not necessary - but I find it definitely makes life a lot nicer. Even my non-techy wife loves our smart light switches and window shades (which she made fun of me for installing when we bought the house but now tells me she couldn't live without).

If this supported HomeKit I would 100% buy this for our front door - which is currently one big pane of glass.

Actually I have several times over. And the solution is simple…raise your kids well and teach them. Avoidance won’t help your kids grow into responsible adults
