About a week ago i moved my home folder to an external drive. Today on my favourites bar on the left hand side of finder all the options are missing? Music, Video, Photo etc .. The disk shows up and the content can be read etc but not via favourites. Anybody help?
Yeah? How does one do that? EDIT: Its okay I've found it in finder preferences. God knows why they disappeared? - Maybe because the drive seems to unmount every night? :S
That might be the reason. Why not get another 2.5" S-ATA HDD and put it into the Mac mini to store the Home folder?
i could i would just need to buy the cable .. would be interested though to know why the thing keeps doing this ..
Is the external HDD connected via USB or Firewire? And why does the Home directory need to be on an external HDD? Can't you just store the big files on the external HDD and link to them? And do you also have another admin account stored on the SSD? It is useful, in the case the external doesn't get recognised or gets corrupt and can't login into that account.
USB I could link to them - but wanted them to appear in my favourites bar on the left properly with the icons .. hence i thought it was easiet just to move entire home folder. Yes i have a backup admin account on the SSD just in case.
Dragged it to the USB drive. Let it copy. User prefs, advanced, HF directory, changed it clicked lock etc ..
Have you employed the steps laid out here? Move Your Mac's Home Folder to a New Location Anyway, since your Home folder is located on an external HDD connected via USB, that will probably be the cause of the problem, as USB is slow, very slow, compared to an SSD. I have an SSD in my 2007 iMac and 2009 MBP and have the Home folder on the SSD and all the big files are on an external HDD setup, or in the case of the MBP, on another HDD inside the MBP.
That was the guide i used .. Okay so how do i go about moving it back .. whilst leaving my iTunes, iPhoto librarys all on the external
Maybe via aliases? In Mac OS X, what is an alias and how does it work? But maybe the problem vanishes, once the Home folder is on the SSD and the Favourites link to a folder on an external HDD.
Sorry i still dont get how to link that favourites bar to the external. Ill move the Home folder back, no probs. But the contents of the music, photos, videos and downloads folder need to remain elsewhere. SO i want those 4 links on the left hand side of the finder to point to there. I also want to be able to download stuff and it automatically knows it has to download to the external ..
Okay I've made alias's in the fav bar. Ive pointed safard, chrome and firefox to download to the external. Ive pointed iphoto to find the library on the external. Ive told iTunes to point to the external. Yet iTunes is still blank?!
Have you started up iTunes and holding down the OPTION/Alt key to select the iTunes library file on the external HDD?
That new library (or are there several libraries?) may have been created before you opened the library from the external HDD. Just open each library and see, if they are empty or not and then decide, if you can delete them or not. Have you already looked at this? Helpful Information for Any Mac User by GGJstudios
