I have very similar requirements as yours and am looking for a solution so really appreciate you coming back and telling us your experience.

I did not try paperless. One of the things that made Devon so appealing is that it can integrate fully with the Fuji Scansnap. You push the one touch scan button and Devon does the rest including generating a text file for your doc with OCR. The Scansnap does come with the same OCR that Devon comes with so it is a shame you have to pay for it twice.

ScanSnap with DevonThink Pro Office works like a dream. I've been using it for my paperless archiving for the last 5 years or so. I tried some of the other alternatives (Paperless and Yep amongst them) but DTP was a better fit for my needs. I found it pretty intuitive from the start though, but I know that puts me in the minority!

There's a beta for the DTP synchronise between Macs functionality ongoing at the moment which looks promising too. I've tried the beta but am currently using ChronoSync instead. I've created an encrypted sparsebundle on Dropbox and sync my local databases to that - works well enough for me.

You might give Bento FileMaker a try. Looks like it might do what you need.

Pretty happy now with Devon. It is extremely powerful and once you get the hang of it pretty easy. Helps if you have a Fuji ScanSnap scanner too.
