I have logged into my Macbook today and other than my documents (fortunately), everything has disappeared..

My Safari has rebooted, and no longer shows my bookmarks. I've lost them all. Whenever I go onto a website, it says "a keychain cannot be found to store safari"....what does this mean?

In addition, the icons on my dock have disappeared, other than the default ones.

Also, my desktop background has gone, and I'm not able to change it anymore.

Does anyone know what has happened here please? I'm ever so confused and don't how to resolve it....🙁

Are you sure you are logged into YOUR account?
Do you have a backup?
What Mac OS X version are you using?
Does anyone else have access to your Mac and account?

Yes, absolutely, I've logged in/out again a few times, shutdown/ restarted...but still no joy. The version is 10.4.11

What do you mean by a back up?

No one else has access to my account, it's my own personal account/ laptop....I don't share it.

Well, what is it? I haven't heard of it before....?

Also, whenever I log out, it all goes back to the start again....Safari's not even storing my history now...

Is it worth taking it in for a service?

A backup:
In Information Technology, a backup or the process of backing up refers to making copies of data so that these additional copies may be used to restore the original after a data loss event. The verb form is back up in two words, whereas the noun is backup (often used like an adjective in compound nouns).

Have you looked into your Trash yet?

Apple Service may be able to help you, but it will cost money.

Oh, I have my files backed up on an external hard drive, for example important documents and photos.

There's a lot in my trash! Any idea what I should be looking for? Could I have accidently trashed something that would cause this?

Your bookmarks are stored in a file called Bookmarks.plist, I don't know about your keychain though.

I think I may have to give them a ring....

Thank you for your help. I'll look for that list now. 🙂

All the best.
