It is strange that home screen and lock screen used up all my battery. I haven't used my iPad for around half a day and the last time I used it, it had around 60% left. I placed it aside on a table and didn't notice it for half a day. Then, it has only less than 30% left and the iPad is warm. It is iPad Air 2 running iOS 9.2, purchased 2 months ago. Is it defective device or software bug?

This is 100% a guess but do you have a Smart Cover? Perhaps by an odd bit of chance the magnets were lined up in such a way that the screen was activating and de activating on its own? Or maybe it's just a one of. I've had an app do this once but never the lock screen.

No, it does not have any case or smart cover.
Also I have never used one since purchased.

You should get a Smart Cover it won't hurt your precious battery juice. I had a Smart Case and the juice never ran out. It says at 100%. Not like Android Lillopop 5.0 it drained some juices with smart case closed.
