Have upgraded upgraded to 14.5 on my Apple TV 4K and have been getting audio an audio noise in the background like a clicking this is affecting movies and tv shows. the noise occurs whether using tv speakers or HomePods. Thinking it may just be this specific configuration I tried the other Apple TV 4K which also has updated to 14.5.

Playing music caused the computers app to crash however before the crash the audio was only playing from the left hand speaker.

Any ideas on how to resolve this?

It's hard to say because so many devices are involved. Perhaps you should try to reset the AppleTV to factory settings. Look in the Settings app > System > Reset.

Unfortunately having tried this the noise is still present

Then I suspect a defective AppleTV. Do you have any AirPods to test it with? If you hear the same noises with AirPods, TV speakers, and Homepods that will probably point to the AppleTV.

I’m hoping it’s not a defective AppleTV as I’m getting the same issue on a HD and 2 4k models.

I have a feeling tvOS 14.5 may have something to do with it. Hoping it’s not 3 dud units. Don’t have the noise issue when streaming from AppleTV+, Disney+, PrimeTV or YouTube.

Now I don't think it's a hardware issue. Maybe it's the audio source. What is the source? I don't think you ever mentioned it. All you've said so far is that it's not AppleTV+, Disney+, Prime, or YouTube.

The movies and tv content are mp4 through homesharing.

I had the exact same audio issue after the 14.5 update, I had to go back to tv os 14.4 to fix

I’ve gone back on the Apple TV HD but the 4K ones can’t be downgraded which is a pain. I’ve now also discovered along with tvOS 14.5 it also affects home sharing in iOS 14.5 and macOS Big Sur 11.3
