You guys suggesting something is wrong with everyone's router, interference, defective apple TV, etc are ignoring the fact that a few people are having the exact same issue with the same movie files (ie. Inside Out, Ant Man to name a couple). Do you have these movies on your home share and they're streaming perfect for you? Other movies stream fine for me personally. SD, HD, doesn't matter, they're working fine for me except Inside Out. It worked with an ATV3, but not the ATV4.

Exactly, I have well over 300 films at 1080p and high file sizes which I have encoded myself and which all buffer fine. I have nearly 100 films I have bought on iTunes which also buffer fine.

Behaviour with new films, and it is specifically new films as new tv shows are fine, is absolutely identifiable. You can see the progress bar loading then dropping back constantly, back and forth, as it plays. Other films buffer in front and you can see the buffer move as the film progresses.

I can go back to my last purchased iTunes film FF7 as the last one which streams fine.

Inside Out is a very specific example and one which buffers fine on ATV3 but not on ATV4.

It does sound like buffering has changed with 9.1 so hopefully that will be released soon and this issue can be put to bed.

Still working like a champ over here. Must have streamed 25 movies off of home sharing by now.
I can officially put my foot in my mouth. My wife was about ready to throw the remote through the TV yesterday. It kept buffering when she was trying to play Sponge Bob (1080p iTunes).

Glad it's not just me... along with some of the other titles mentioned in this thread, the recent release of "Roger Waters: The Wall" also exhibits issues when streaming via home sharing.

Really hoping for an update that will resolve this issue soon. All movies appear to stream perfectly fine to my second and third generation AppleTV.

A couple of people are reporting this is fixed in 9.1 beta. Hopefully that will drop soon.

I can report that even perfectly .m4v 1.5GB tv episodes won't buffer on my 9.1 Beta 3 Apple TV 4.
It worked flawlessly for a few days, today literally *nothing* can be streamed from my MacBook Pro. No movie loads, no tv episode plays without constant hickups. AC network is flawless, MBP is at 5% load.

Honestly, this is a really bad experience overall.

I haven't managed a single stream of anything without the buffering issue so the fact this worked flawlessly for you for a time is still encouraging.

Well, I disconnected the power, started a random episode and it started buffering the entire episode within 30 seconds. There is something very wrong with this device. Plex developers are getting a ******** of blame on their forums, yet when they ask users to try the exact movies over homesharing, they don't work either.

I'm honestly at a point where I'm going to throw this thing against a brickwall. A 39€ Raspberry Pi 2 hasn't had a single issue with any video file I ever tried to play with it. And I didn't even have to transcode anything.

Keep in mind that not everyone is experiencing this problem! I have a ATV4 64gb that streams HD (and everything else I throw at it) content flawless whether through Plex or via home sharing both on a Mac mini.

Posting so I can get notified about crhendo's experience with 9.1. Thanks.

My USB-C adapter finally arrived in the mail so I loaded up 9.1 Beta 3 and can now absolutely confirm that the buffering problem on all my problem iTunes movies (Inside Out, Ed Sheeran Live at Wembley, Antman) is now fixed and they all work as they should in fact you can actually see the buffer filling if you swipe up which NEVER happened with the previous firmware.

And for those of you who suspected that our networks, Windows PC's, outdated Mac's etc etc were the real problem, I have a second ATV4 sitting beside the recently updated ATV4 that is refusing to fill the buffer for any of these movies.

Unfortunately (for me at least) this raises more questions that I would like to know the answer to:-
  1. What is "special" about these 3 movies other than the fact that they were all released after the ATV4 was released?
  2. Why was it that no Apple Employee (and I spoke to a lot of them) would believe what we all have been saying all along, wouldn't even offer an RMA, wouldn't offer an iTunes refund AND all said they would get back to me by email and then never did?
  3. Why isn't this "fix" mentioned in the Beta release notes?
Our family has spent $thousands on our iTunes collection and I have to say that if this is Apple's idea of good Customer Service for loyal Apple Customers like us then perhaps they have forgotten who made them so successful in the first place.

....end of rant.

I am experiencing the exact same behavior with only 3 recent movies downloaded from iTunes, Inside Out, Age of Ultron, and Trainwreck. Trainwreck was downloaded post ATV4 so I can't verify functionality but can for sure verify it with the other two on older ATVs. I thought something happened to my router and reset it to factory and started fresh, also switched to a different computer to share my movies from, and tried a different external drive, all with no luck. I still get the buffering..... If you just touch the remote touch pad, you can watch the buffer fill up and then wipe itself out, like it is having major packet loss after buffering so much. I am sure they either hosed the code in ATV4 or changed a file format slightly, but that doesn't explain why Age of Ultron failed but Jurassic World doesn't have a problem. JW was downloaded after Age of Ultron. Hope 9.1 drops very soon, tired of being forced to stream those movies,if I choose to,watch them!

It's not the end of the world people! I have an ATV4 64 GB running 9.0.1. I only own two of the usual suspects of mentioned throughout this topic, Trainwreck and Antman. I have not had a single buffering issue (and I have tried several times with each to see if I can replicate problem) with those two movies or with any other one for that matter regardless any combination of play be it iTunes, home sharing, Plex, etc. So let's hope 9.1 is released soon to help all those suffering with this affliction.

Awesome to hear. I hope they release it soon so I can see if my issues go away too.

I hope then 9.1 comes soon. I will add my chorus to the complaints. Same issues with the new movies and a number of old ones, and some work fine (old ones). It is a real pain. And they all worked fine before on my APTV 2.

I haven't seen it mentioned but has anyone tried running the Video's that buffer through something like MediaInfo to see what the differences are in the videos? I ran a report for a recent purchase "Mission Impossible - Rouge Nation" and found it's using Profile @ High:4.0 where as some of my older purchases are Main:3.1. I suspect it's the higher profiles that are behaving badly?

Not sure if it's the same issue. I have checked and it doesn't SEEM to be my network. The Wifi or whatever just tanks hard at times. Yesterday I streamed The Polar Express without any issue (720p) (using Plex) over my network to my ATV4. Shortly after, I tried watching a trailer in Apple Trailers and it took 5 min to load the info page and then I lost count/gave up while it spun trying to load. Same happens in Plex. I ran the Speedtest app and at that moment I was getting .36 down. REALLY?! It's in the same spot my ATV3 was which ran 100% like a champ ALL the time. :\

I've been testing ATV3 versus ATV4 using the same tv with the same cables/connections. Using the ATV3, I can stream via home sharing everything I own flawlessly. When I swap out the ATV3 for the ATV4 (64gb), I just unplug the ATV3 and plug in the ATV4. After I fire it up everything that has DRM in it stutters eventually. Anything that I've ripped seems to stream fine, but I would note those are lower def videos. The result is the same via wifi or wired. My ATV3 works, my ATV4 has issues. The only conclusions I can draw is that for me, it's not the network. The only difference is the device.

I bought Rogue Nation, no buffering issue with this film. Still got an issue with Inside Out.

Hey update 9.1 fixes the homeshare stuttering/buffering issues. Whole movie (HD included) now buffers properly to the ATV 4 issue gone! Just installed today

Same here. Tried the movies I had issues with before updating, issues. After the update, they've been playing just fine now. Bonus was the update also fixed some weird control issues I had when using a harmony remote, so I'm pretty happy with this update.
