I've got some 2160p movies on my iMac and want to stream to my Apple TV. The lag is awful and I am unable to watch anything for more than a few seconds at a time before it lags again.

Any pointers guys?

thanks

DO NOT use airplay

keep in mind, if your computer and aTV are in a back room, and the router is in the front of the house, both the aTV and computer talk to the router, and not each other directly, so if the signal is weak, it's going over that weak signal twice.

plex and infuse will both give you a "Netflix like" experience on your aTV.
All your media will be tagged with title, personal, and photos.

plex - must run a server program on your Mac, supports most file types, If your player doesn't support the file being played, the Mac will convert as you watch. it can even convert just the audio, and pass the video untouched.
--Has player apps on most smartTVs and streaming devices, as well as android and iOS.
--You can stop playback on your TV, and pick up on your phone fairly seamlessly.
--Allows remote connections, and sharing your library with friends, as long as your internet is fast enough.
--The free version will work for most things, but they have a premium paid level, that will let you sync media to your mobile devices for watching off-line, among other features.
--sever handles the media tagging.

infuse - share a media folder from your Mac using file sharing, and then connect from the aTV.
has iOS and aTV versions, not sure about other mobile devices.
the tagging happens on the aTV, there is some sharing between devices on your network, but I use plex, so not 100% sure how it works.
it requires a premium subscription for "higher end" file types

Reset all devices including router. If able, connect both your computer and ATV to the router via ethernet to rule out wifi issues. If all else fails, try pausing the movie for a few minutes. Home Sharing, via the Computers app on the ATV, will cache ahead the movie into memory which may eliminate the lag.
