Each time I try to access "my computer" I have to return to iTunes on my iMac and reset home sharing. A real pain. Is this normal?

Once turned on, it should remain on. can't think of any fix off hand expect you could try:

Open iTunes and disable home sharing.

Quit itunes

Open iTunes and reinstate home sharing.

Ive updated my ATV with the latest iCloud stuff and have had no issues so I don't think its that.....You have the latest version of iTunes I guess?

Happens to me too, but I think it's ultimately quicker and easier to just go to into the ATV menu and turn off and then turn back on Home Sharing. You are then up and running in under 10 seconds....all from the comfort of your easychair.
