This seems to be the best place to post this. I'm new to the home app, but struggling to create my first automation. Doesn't strike me as something that should be difficult at all- when my motion sensor is activated, I want my phone to sound an alarm. Like just a simple timer type ring tone.

I know I should delve into the manual as it were, and I promise i will do that, but would anyone be so kind as to point me in the right direction here? Does it involve shortcuts?

Appreciate your time, thank you.

With HomeKit alone, you can set it up to receive notifications and it will play the sound you have notifications set to. Keep in mind though that all your notifications will play this same sound.

I think what you’re trying to accomplish is a little more complicated which involves Shortcuts and a third party Shortcuts companion app calls Pushcut which runs an automation server on a dedicated device running 24/7. One of the more informative HomeKit YouTube creators made a video on something similar just a couple days ago. I’ll post the link below and see if it helps. The video is partitioned so just slide the video till you see “Running an automation server with...” (~19:40 mark)

I have an Apple Watch that alerts me if I can’t find my iphone but what I’m looking for is a shortcut that I can set up on an old iPhone 8 I have that will allow me to see if I activate it that my iPhone is ringing unlike the alert on my Apple Watch that just alerts me with a beeping sound, I wonder if anyone knows of one?

That’s a different matter altogether. You might be better creating your own thread?

Ok, thanks for the replies, so I'm not missing something, it actually is a bit complex. Thank you for the tips!

it's not hard, it's quite easy.
it's just not in automations

in home app, open your motion detector, hit the settings gear in the bottom right
open "status and notifications"
turn on "notifications on this phone"

you can then set it up to only alert during certain times.
you can also set it so it only alerts you if you are either "at home" or "not at home"

I did see that. but it's not a notification that I'm looking for, which I assume is a message on my welcome screen. I'm looking for an audible ring tone that will wake me up. That's different, no?

I agree this should be a new thread, but in the settings app on the phone (the main one with the cell plan)
go to cellular settings
look for "allow calls on other devices"
all devices signed into your Apple ID are available, you can turn them on/off individually.
when my phone rings, my entire house goes crazy (phone, watch, iPad, laptop all start ringing)

it might ding, but probably not enough to wake you up
I'm not sure what it does, but you could test it and see if it would be enough. It's possible a ding and turning on your lights, might be enough to wake you.

if you have a HomePod and Apple Music, you could make an automation to have it play music.
Same if you have an aTV, but it would need to be able to turn on your TV via HDMI-CEC (also need Apple Music)

you could get a "smart outlet" that's homekit compatible, and plug something that makes noise into it.
like a old radio.
or they make plug in horns (might be too loud)
or something like this (you'd need a "wall wart" and some adapters to make it work though) https://www.amazon.com/Vibrate-Shaker-Vibrating-Alarm-DryBuddyFLEX/dp/B07SXD783Z

Hmm, no, none of those solutions seem very good to me. The notification ding would not wake me up.

However, just having my phone play an alarm sound would work perfectly. I am a bit mystified at how difficult that is. Seems like such a basic function!

I'm running into the same exact problem. Did you ever find a solution to this?

Ideally i'd like an alarm or my apple watch to vibrate until i dismiss it when there is motion detected on the cameras
