Bought the Eero Pro 6 on Black Friday but its back ordered. Noticed Linksys also makes a HomeKit WiFi router and its's a little cheaper. Should I jump ship and switch to Linksys?

EDIT... just noticed the Linksys isn't WiFi 6. Please delete this thread 🤦‍♀️

eero Pro 6 is not Homekit supported... yet. According to eero, they’re waiting on Apple to approve the certification. I received one on the Black Friday sale and was disappointed that it didn’t have the HomeKit support. If it doesn’t happen by the Amazon return deadline, I’m sending it back. I should’ve researched so I don’t blame anyone but myself. Other than that, eero is a solid home WiFi option. I currently have a mix of 9 pro routers and beacons. I’m usually reluctant to add any Amazon smart home products to my home but if Apple sells it on their site and allows it in HomeKit, can’t be that bad.

I realize the original question is now moot, however the subject of this thread led me to wonder - how important is this, that your WiFi router is HomeKit compatible?

Other than providing access to the router settings within the Home app, which is something that really is not needed very darn often, what difference does it make?

(My mesh WiFi is a Google mesh system that I've had since they first came out. It hasn't even occurred to me that I would want my router to be compatible with HomeKit, and in general I am all-in with HomeKit smart home devices).

With HomeKit routers, you have the option to completely block off anything outside of your home from accessing your smart home devices. There are three options. Restricted which restricts access to within your home like I mentioned. This doesn’t even allow firmware updates to be pushed from the manufacturer of the product. Next is Automatic, which blocks off access but only allows the accessory manufacturer to push firmware updates, then it goes back to blocking mode. This is the recommended setting. Third is no restriction which allows anything to get in. Also, with HomeKit routers, if one or any of your mesh routers disconnects from the system, it is viewable in the status bar. Also viewable in Home settings under Network and Routers. Other than that, not much else you can do with it unless it’s doing something in the background I’m not aware of.

Elaborating on Inij24's response...

My motivation is because most of these products are engineered and manufactured by Chinese companies. I use Eufy cameras inside my household and they're also a Chinese company. And I don't completely trust my personal life to a Chinese company who may compromise my personal life in one way or another. Same as how the US banned Huawei networking devices. And how China is treating it's control of Hong Kong and reneging on the Sino-British Accord after the agreement was made and power was transferred. A HomeKit router would give me just a little more piece of mind.

Wow! Did not know it wasn't HomeKit certified yet. Really weird how the Apple site clearly says names HomeKit on their Eero product listings. Would you happen to know if the Linksys MX8000 is HomeKit certified?

Ok, I think there might be some confusion here. The eero, eero pro and eero beacon are all currently supported by HomeKit secure routers. They were the first to get this certification. The eero 6 and eero pro 6, which are eero’s newest WiFi routers that support WiFi 6 are not currently supported by HomeKit secure routers. I had 4 eero pro routers and 2 eero beacons working perfectly fine in HomeKit until I received the eero pro 6 and 2 beacons on Black Friday. The issue I ran into was that I connected the new eero pro 6 as my gateway router, which basically serves as the mother ship and is connected directly to the modem. The fact that I did this wiped out all my previous eeros from HomeKit since the new gateway eero pro 6 I added doesn’t support HomeKit yet. Had I just added it to another part of the house and not as the gateway, I’d still have HomeKit support with my network. Hope this clears it up.

As far as Linksys goes, the only system they sell that I’m aware of that supports HomeKit is the Velop mesh system. Not sure if that’s the same model number you’re asking about but if it is, then yes. However, I’m pretty sure the Linksys Velop system has “AC” (followed by a number that indicates how many routers in the pack and square footage it covers) as the model number. The Linksys Velop and eero (or eero pro) are currently the only WiFi systems that support HomeKit. Nothing with WiFi 6 yet. Just check out what Apple sells on their online store and that’s all that’s available for HomeKit right now.

Only Linksys Velop tri-band Wi-Fi 5 systems have Homekit firmware at this time.

This has been a helpful discussion, it's made me more conscious of security implications with my WiFi router and possible merits to upgrading to a HomeKit compatible router at some point. Most likely I will want to do that if/when I upgrade my computer to one that is WiFi 6 capable, because at that point my current router wouldn't be able to provide that full capability, so there would be two reasons to upgrade (get WiFi6, and get HomeKit compatibility).

Does this make sense?

Yes only Linksys Velop. Wi-Fi 6 Velop MX8000 is not supported yet. You said the same for eero? The Wi-Fi 6 versions, not yet supported but standard eero and eero pro are.
Yes. I just wanted to make sure we don’t confuse the OP anymore than we have to lol.

Two things for the whole group so as not to double post...

1) Apple online store has all the currently supported HomeKit routers available now so if you need to know which are and which aren’t, that will answer your question.

2) According to Andrew at Apple Insider, iOS 14.3 now allows firmware updates for devices directly from HomeKit (needs support by the third party though). This makes me wonder if you can leave the HomeKit router setting on “Restricted” or if you still need to open the network up to the third parties.

This has been quite informative for me. I'm still rocking my Time Capsule - seems like a HomeKit router is the next best thing. (Airport app is still usable on iOS 14, but how much longer?)

I’m taking the eero pro 6 back tomorrow. Not only did I lose HomeKit functionality but it’s been causing WiFi issues since I installed it. Devices dropping off the network for no apparent reason, most notably, my Nest Hello doorbell. Can’t have that. Gonna go back to the regular (non WiFi 6) eero Pro with HomeKit.

Not sure where to post this so I'll pick this thread.

I have a Velop system and finally received the HomeKit firmware update a week or so ago. I enabled HomeKit integration today. No issues so far; I've left all devices except for a couple in Automatic mode (the exceptions I set to Restricted) and all of them are behaving normally.

My main disappointment, and the reason for posting, is that every HomeKit device I have appears in the management list but one (well, excluding my HomePods and Apple TVs; ahem, Apple). I recently bought a Vizio D-series TV for use in my workout area and it is not listed despite supporting HomeKit. I don't keep any smart TV on the network, partly because I use Apple TV and TiVo for media delivery to them, and also because they are enormous privacy invaders, with Vizio among the worst. So I would rather this new TV not be on the network either, but it will see limited use so I'd rather not spend to get another Apple TV (which would cost as much as the TV itself did) to go with it. I'd rather just AirPlay directly.

Turning on HomeKit router support seemed like the perfect solution because then I could just set the TV to "no access" and cut Vizio off at the source. But again, alas, it does not show up in the management list. I would guess that device manufacturers don't have any say in whether they can be managed or not, but if they do, leave it to Vizio to opt out.

How has that been working out for you? (Since ditching the 6)

I’m glad you asked... lol

So when I removed the Pro 6 and added the old Pro, HomeKit functionality didn’t pop up. I called support and apparently the Pro 6 injected some files into my network that prevented HomeKit from reappearing. The only way to get it back was to completely remove my network and start from scratch. Ok, I’ll play... After spending some time redoing my network, I got to the last beacon and the whole network stuck on updating. Another call to support was useless. Tried again but this time I updated each eero as I connected them. Looked promising, until I got to one of the last of my HomeKit devices. My Yale Lock with August Connect. It wouldn’t get on the network. I tried rebooting my phone and when it came back on, all my eeros were dropping like flies, from HomeKit and the network. My iPhone was in and out of WiFi along with all other devices in my home. Spent from 2pm to 5am the next morning all for naught. Called to support for the third time. Reset each eero one by one and tried again. Haven’t added any HomeKit devices yet but now my iPhone doesn’t auto connect to the WiFi and it says the password is wrong when I try to connect it. So every time I connect to my WiFi, I have to enter the password. On the last network reset , I actually changed the SSID and password for the WiFi but something is going on with this and I’m at a loss. Also, my AppleTVs are getting booted off the network and they’re freezing up when I navigate the Home Screen. It took me about 30 mins to reset one of them in the settings lol. That’s not an exaggeration. 3 calls to eero support and 3 complete resets of my network with no working solution. I’m exhausted.
Worked fine before the Pro 6 but something is going on now after the Pro 6. I’m at wits end and about to switch to the Linksys Velop. Going pretty good actually... if I was a masochist Lolol

Oh wow that’s a shame. I tried Eero a year or so ago and had trouble getting Nest devices to connect. Plus at that time their solution for 2.4 was terrible. I’ve been using the Eero Pro again for about a month now and it’s been flawless. Haven’t had a single problem. But I haven’t messed with HomeKit WiFi yet so maybe that’s why.

I had HomeKit routers with eero pro working flawlessly since it was released to the public... up until I introduced the pro 6 into my life.

That’s weird. Could it be a firmware thing they get after adding the devices to HomeKit WiFi? I have little to no understanding of how that stuff works.

Speaking of firmware, I asked support if they have any other open support tickets for the new firmware. Of course they wouldn’t admit it and she seemed hesitant when I asked, like searching for an answer that would soothe me. Whatever it is, I’m pretty sure whatever files that Pro 6 “injected” into my network caused this mess. Multiple factory resets and changing the SSID and password did nothing to cause a full fix. Serves my right for jumping on a Black Friday deal I didn’t really need.

I don't know the first thing about Eero but you have my sympathies. Normally, routers can't leave traces behind when they are removed. Do Eeros phone home? I wonder if that's the issue - when you dropped in the new ones, a change was made to your Eero "account" in the cloud that can't be undone? Just a thought. If you have to have an Eero cloud login for these routers, would it be worth creating a new login/account just to see if you get back to normal with a clean start?

Quick update on this. I’m in way too deep with eero. I tried one more time before making the switch and so far so good *knock on wood*. As of now, I only connected personal devices (laptops, cell phones, tablets) and my HomePods, AppleTVs and Televisions and a Peloton. No smart home devices yet but it seems to be running solid now. I factory reset each router and left them unplugged until it was time to connect them as if I just removed them from the box.

It may have been my fault. I have this OCD with mesh WiFi systems that each room should have its own router for the best connections. I was probably bogging down the system. I own 7 pro routers and 5 beacons. Probably a bit much lol. I just went with the 7 routers now.

What did you mean by do they “phone home?”
