Apple has been updating the HomePod software alongside major iOS updates, so it was something of a surprise when iOS 12.1 was released yesterday with no accompanying HomePod 12.1 software to go along with it.

As it turns out, though, there is a HomePod 12.1 update, it just appears to be bugged for those who updated their HomePod to the version 12 software after updating to iOS 12.

On Reddit, a user who purchased a brand new HomePod running HomePod software version 11 was able to update to the 12.1 software, which apparently includes stability updates and bug fixes.

On Twitter, developer Khaos Tian said that Apple is offering up the HomePod update with an internal URL that prevents people from downloading it.

lol Apple is serving HomePod update with internal URL so no one can update it to 12.1 🤦‍♂️ Someone needs to kick Pallas V2 and have it return the right value. pic.twitter.com/WxsYzJVsHu - Khaos Tian (@KhaosT) October 31, 2018

Apple may be able to fix this HomePod software issue relatively easily, so we could see the HomePod 12.1 software become available for download shortly.

Update: Just after this article was posted, Apple made the HomePod 12.1 software available. It can be downloaded from the Home app on the iPhone and the iPad by tapping on the house-shaped icon in the upper left, tapping on "Home Settings," selecting your home, and choosing the "Software Update" option.

Thought that was odd myself, someone dropped the ball at Apple on this one
[doublepost=1541007364][/doublepost]Well that was quick, available now

3.05 GB.
That seems like a full OS install rather than an incremental update. Does the HomePod update differently from other iOS devices?

- Hey, Tim, it looks like we’ve never uploaded the update for the HomePod.
- for home what?!
- you know that speaker that we released at the beginning of the year
- oh...

Don’t know about anyone else, but I refuse to update the software for this device given the feedback about the changing EQ for the Bass on it in the first update. I don’t want software to mess with a decent hardware device. Anyone else not updating theirs?

They've already tweaked the sound multiple times through many different updates. I have to say that it sounds way more balanced than what it used to when it first launched. However, I haven't tried 12.1 yet, but I like the sound in the previous update.

I wish I had this few sales!!
I'd feel that 3 million (few) sales would be a nice problem to have!
Well, that's a drop in a bucket compared to everything else they make, and only an estimate. Perhaps "how few people have HomePods" was the wrong language. Perhaps I should have said "how few people use their HomePods."

Whatever I guess. I'm still not sold on it. Not useful enough yet. Maybe in a few years.

I just updated. Finally saw 12.1 this afternoon, it was missing yesterday.

BTW, a single update request updated BOTH of my HomePods. Did not need to do each update independently.

Wow not only did I forget HomePod exists, Apple did too.

I suspect HomePod future is grim.
