Can the HomePod be used as my main audio out source for my Mac?

Yes it appears like any other output device. Since it currently uses AirPlay 1 there is a lag, however most media will synchronise, so the only time you notice the lag is when playing and pausing for example.

I see the option for HomePod as output but keep getting error message when I try to connect it. This is in iTunes where the issue occurs.
