So let's say i have a Sony DVD player, Sony TV and 2 HomePods as a surround system

What's the set up should be like? how to connect these together?

Oh, so this is a big proof you can't use HomePod as a surround system unless you use Apple TV?

I think it's not fair, yes a lot of us are subscribed to services like Netflix, but what if i want to play a DVD or Blu-ray?

Then you have to buy a product that supports that functionality. The HomePod doesn't.

I don't mean that to come off as rude, but it is true.

Homepod's were never intended to be used as a surround sound system....stereo yes, but not in a typical 5.1 or more surround sound set up.
As for using a DVD player that needs to have a physical cable connected to another device to output it's sound and picture.....be it via HDMI, Optical, RCA, Coax or whatever.......the HomePod again was never meant to and can't be used in that manner....unless there is a wee box/gismo that can receive cabled audio inputs and output it as an airplay signal....but I don't know or care for such a device.

TV's are only Airplay receivers, not senders, so they can't send anything to the Homepods. This may of course change in the future, but as of now, not possible.

What is not fair? You don't buy a product that didn't suit your needs of course.

You rip the disc, put it on your server, and stream it to the Apple TV. That's what we do.
