HomePod smacks of a me-too product? What other consumer-priced desktop speaker employs adaptive beamforning and dynamic self-equalization through and array of microphones and drivers, in order to produce superior sound?
Very much so

It is riding the wave of Alexa. Does it sound better? yes but it is not a great speaker still.

Alexa is a speaker that employs adaptive beamforming and dynamic self equalization in order to create superior sound, like HomePod? Could you please elaborate with details?

You are really caught up with this beam forming aren't you?

My question is who cares? You don't get great speakers and the affordability is not entry level. Apple is too late to the party

Who cares about adaptive beam forming tech....

The function is the same as any other smart speaker yet worth a ton more yet still not great by speaker standards

No its not. I suspect you have no idea as to what that is, how it works, and the benefits achieved. Right? If I'm wrong please elaborate in detail, speaking to your understanding of the technology.

Yes, I am. As are many others. Tell me how much you know about adaptive beamforming, and its benefits.

Apple was late to the party on smartphones and watches. Pundits said both would fail. Worked out decently well, lol.

Let’s agree to stop using “late to the party” as any reason Apple will not succeed in this market.

Stop reading what other people say and think for yourself. You’re like the 5758474 person to say late to the party. It. Does. Not. Matter.

So this this is available for preorder yet as a consumer Apple has yet to define if I can play my ****ing music to my $350 speaker from my Mac, my iOS devices, my library, if it will be Bluetooth accessible, what HomeKit capabilities I can expect. Not even an manual is online.

Great launch *******s.
Yea, I’m totally ordering one.
Check is in the mail.

And very late to the music player market with iPod. Clearly that was a massive fail on Apple's part.

Yeah, lol.

I mean, I’d actually agree if Apple just released its own “me too” crappy speaker with Siri. As you say, the tech in this speaker is something to behold and it sounds better than any smart speaker on the market. It’s different. It’s Apple. Those 2 things are enough to be very successful.

Not sure if you are being sarcastic here nor not.
Really?

I think the tech has enormous potential. And can be further scaled upwards for future premium products with even better performance.

Huh! No. play again buddy.

Obviously there are products that fit in between...but to have a reviewer say the homepod sound quality is "like listening to a live performance" sounds like BS.

Not if she's very familiar with live performance, which seemingly SHE HIS.

Considering 2 speaker solutions in most rooms / listening position are not even getting close to that, even if she was exaggerating a bit it would still be a fantastic value for the price.

I think only Apple's hardcore fans will be considering this one...this rest of us will pass and not even think twice about it...too little too late Apple

Too late... to amass 80% of the "smart" speaker market profits, I think they can truly live with that... Like they lived with "only" having 15% of the smart phone market globally (85-90% of profits), or 10% of the laptop market (and over 50% of profits)... A complete "tragedy" that would be.

Future? People here never think beyond right now. Notice the original reception of a FaceID as if it was only a means for authentication?

Truly shocking that a $2000 speaker sounds better than a $350 home assistant.

This

I guess he can say, according to his extensive testing, this speaker is no good for audiophiles.

Also, no point to have $2000 speakers if you use it with mp3 or CD. I still think nothing can beat an old fashioned vinyl

It simply doesn’t matter. It’s a speaker, not a space shuttle

So, trashtalk without cause...

Considering the "space shuttle" probably has a lot less tech than this speaker (it was conceived in the late 1960s-early 1970s after all), so indeed it is "not the space shuttle" is not the argument you should be making.

It actually counters your point. Try harder next time.

Didn't read a single comment, but as someone with new MBP/X/iPad Pros/TV/Mini and everyone around me is on Apple stuff (usually my older stuff)......this is useless to me until they get Siri at least in the same ballpark or hell even sport as Google's Assistant. I almost never use Siri because it's so worthless and cant ever answer anything, and literally the one or two times a month I try it when I'm in a pinch and need something done via voice or whatever 100% Siri fails me. Literally every time.

Fix that ****.

I wonder if I'll be able to cheat and use Google through this somehow

Agreed, they're laying on the 'audiophile sound quality' hyperbole way too thick. I have no doubt that it will sound better than the competition, but any audiophile can glance at the HomePod and its price and know that it's not going to be top quality sound quality.
Kind of like a $100 bottle of wine tastes twice as good as a $50 bottle of wine.
[doublepost=1517022747][/doublepost]
$10K loudspeakers sound better than a $350 "smart speaker"? What? How it that possible?!

Clearly, this is one of those cases where you have to consider how much better for the price, features and convenience vs. a reasonably comparable product(s). If it sounds as good a set of small bookshelf type speakers from Yamaha, Polk, CV, AEs in the same price range (either powered or with a small amp), with these features/packaging, I'm a buyer.
A $350 speaker will give you 98% of your listening pleasure. The other 2% will cost you.

you really think the space shuttle has less tech than a speaker? Not all tech is electronic. In fact, that may be the most absurd statement I have ever heard.

Besides the point, there’s only so much you can do with a speaker. Beam forming is akin to say curved tv displays and other fads that while cool, are really not things that transform the experience

There’s a reason iPod HIFI didn’t take off. This will suffer the same fate.

Man, the fact you even talk about Ipod HIFI like it means anything after
snarking half assed false equivalencies, about the damn space shuttle.

My background is computer, systems and software engineering and physics engineering, so spare me the kid talk.
Go read up about the tech or stop commenting about it.

The speaker reacts live to room acoustic of the actual sound it puts out and can place sound by bouncing it off the environment it mapped...

How the hell is that irrelevent to how it will sound; you make the argument cause right now all I hear is utter ignorance.

You do know there are actual people who have heard this speaker don't you?
