Looking forward to a HomePod if it does not require Apple Music.

It is already known that the HomePod will use AirPlay 2, that, like AirPlay 1 works with any App you have on your iPhone, including Spotify.

AirPlay 1 works automatically with any App that has background audio, and so does AirPlay 2 specification.

Why people keep insisting this will only work with Apple Music? Well, I’m sure Spotify will make everything to spoil the experience, like they do by not making a Apple Watch app, or making an iPad app that’s just a stretched ou iPhone app...

I honestly can't wait to purchase the HomePod and I think it's going to set the bar. I think this is going to be one the biggest releases for 2017 next to the iPhone.

This, i think the HomePod is going to be a game changer, i'll be ordering one as soon as they go live, i've been thinking about ordering 2 one for the bedroom and one for the office as i think they can communicate with each other.

1gb Ram for a speaker??? im in...this is a sure future proof...i think the homePOD 2 will come like 12.9" ipad pro, after 2 years since the first hardware is strong enough

That's what I was thinking.. this speaker has 256 times as much memory as my first Mac. </obligatory nostalgia...>

Man, which post-stamp collector designed that screen ?
(while Joni was busy with tree's, presumably)

Could have really knocked it out of the park if they would have just made one of the side panels or top the same tech from the apple watch. Same apple watch interface with an always on feature. Ram seems a bit lite for a device such as this to be running a simulated SE type program. But who knows.. I guess since the screen isn't really a screen not much besides bluetooth and wifi is really needed. Seems like an interesting device, still not sure if I'm buying it though.

This display thing is very similar to what Google Home has. Google Home display is used for the same purposes but is probably more limited. On the other hand, Google Home's display is placed on a sloped surface (not horizontal) which makes it possible to see it when you are talking to it from some distance (which is a typical case). With HomePod, how am I supposed to see the display. Should I come close and hang over it?

Though Apple's HomePod speaker won't launch until December, Apple on Friday released firmware for the device, allowing developers to glean information both about the speaker itself and the upcoming iPhone 8 by digging into the code.

According to the latest revelation, shared on Twitter by Avery Magnotti, the screen of the HomePod that's used to display a visible multicolor LED waveform when interacting with Siri measures in at 272 x 340.

The display blends in seamlessly with the top of the device and is primarily dedicated to making it clear when Siri is listening to a command, but it also includes virtual buttons for activating Siri and controlling speaker volume. Based on previous leaks, the screen could also display other shapes or symbols, but its full functionality isn't yet known.

Along with the dimensions of the display, the information leaked today suggests the HomePod is equipped with 1GB RAM, equivalent to the amount of RAM in older iOS devices. HomePod also includes an A8 chip, and combined with the RAM, it's more powerful than competing smart speakers, enabling features like spatial awareness, Siri interactivity, and impressive sound.

As we learned over the weekend, HomePod will run a full version of iOS and can be equated to an iPhone without a screen. It will use a shell app called "SoundBoard" to integrate with the hardware built into the device, and it will include Accessibility features like VoiceOver.

HomePod is priced at $349 and will be available for purchase in December.

[doublepost=1501525735][/doublepost]If "can be equated to an iPhone without a screen" then why in the world doesn't Apple give it access to telephony via FaceBook so you can use it as a speakerphone same as you use your Mac?

I think people are referring to "native" support. Meaning, they don't have to touch their iPhone to play Spotify.

For example, the Echo and Google Home can play from a variety of different music services just by using your voice to tell their respective assistants what to play.

Nobody is concerned that they won't be able to AirPlay to the HomePod. That's a given. I think people are worried that you can only instruct the HomePod to play via Apple Music.

The HomePod screen has the same resolution as the 38mm Apple Watch.

If the top of HomePod is a touchable target, I can’t imagine how bad the fabric mill look after a while of getting bumped by dirty greasy hands.

I'm on the fence with this product. Im just not sure why I would want it honestly.

Understandable. But given once initial reviews are out with this product and consumers have hands on with it, I think the results will be impressive with the sound quality and I think Siri being improved will also be a huge factory with part of the success of the HomePod.

Not the same tech though, it will not allow full range of LCD just dot matrix (type of). At least that's how the demos look from what I've seen. Guess we shall see how it really looks once the final version is released.

It'll be annoying, though, if they choose to do that for this speaker but then artificially restrict that same access on iPhones and iPads.
Apple tends to release new features on new hardware first and then migrate them over in software updates to the rest of their line up.

I guess you don't need a high resolution display on something that your not gonna sit in front of all the time.

My guess is they will do something like the GH did and offer a free 6-9 months with the purchase of the device. You may not have the same deep access to Spotify and other services from the device itself but you can always airplay to it from an iOS device.
