It purposely pauses in case you’re still talking. It’s much faster to not pause, but just to continue your query. eg. ”Hey Siri turn off the lights”.
It could definitely do things faster but the pause after Hey Siri is by design.
I dont pause when i tell siri to pause the movie. I say it in one sentence and it still takes ages.

So you're sure that speakers now are better because tech improved?
Do you know this, or you're making an assumption?
And btw, considering that some tech became stagnant over the years, I don't think it's silly to ask if speakers' tech is facing the same problem.
And btw n.2, with all due respect, you haven't answered the question.
The example I provided, comparing the audio quality between a 10 year old MacBook and a present day MacBook should have answered the question about advances in audio engineering. If you would truly like further reading, here are a couple of references:

Researchers develop a paper-thin loudspeaker

Loudspeaker technology for the 21st century

I still cannot see any reason to buy a "smart" speaker.

The speaker portion will almost always out live the "smarts" portion of the device. Once the manufacturer deems the device too old for updates it might become useless.

How about this... just buy great quality speakers and let your phone be the smarts. Most people aren't more than 3 feet from their phones anyway, or wearing a watch.

YMMV
Multi room audio is the big selling point. I have a proper home theater in my living room but I like having HomePods in the other room

What would be interesting is a battery powered, water proof version for use in the bathroom.

I suggest a Sonos Move or Move 2... which are VERY HP-like (including having direct access to Apple Music and Airplay) but are already battery based and easily move around the house. I have one myself and it both sounds and works great with my generally all-Apple household.

It is NOT waterproof- just water resistant. I have it sitting on the charging ring near my master bath and can lift it off that ring and take it into the bathroom or anywhere else with little effort.

Else, there are MANY other not-Apple-branded, battery-driven speakers that could be used in that way too. I favor Sonos because it also has solid Apple integration. But I have a pair of Oontz waterproof speakers which can go for rides on kayaks and take a fair beating but keep on playing. And light bulb speakers is still a thing if you have suitable sockets in that bathroom. I've never tried those but reviews imply they can work and sound fair-to-good.

How about fixing Siri first? HomePod is just a glorified wirelesss bluetooth speaker right now.

With the AI craze lately, Apple is going to have to play big time catch up. But, I wouldn't be surprised to see some significant improvements in Siri in the next couple of years. They can't afford to lose this race.

I use it mostly for checking weather, controlling lights, setting timers, adding reminders, and adding things to the shopping list. Basic trivia sometimes

Use it to play music or radio in the kitchen and other rooms too and I use airplay2 so I can have the same thing on in every room if I’m moving around the house

For those things it works great! To the point where, on the lights end of things, I’ll have my hands full somewhere else and try to use siri to change the lights and then get frustrated when it doesnt work

Also the fire alarm listener added recently is nice, something started burning in the oven recently, the fire alarm in the kitchen went off, and then I got a ping from homekit. I was in the garage and I saw the alert immediately and went and turned off the oven etc. great feature on its own

Probably one that is stripped down and with old stock wifi modules. Just like the "renewed" HomePod.

Hmm, acknowledged usefulness. Too bad there isn't a way to sync up multiple BT speakers in a similar way.
Not bluetooth but I use raspberry pis hooked up to the aux on (mostly edifier) speakers (mostly ones that also support bt like https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08QR7CT48) and shairport-sync (https://github.com/mikebrady/shairport-sync) to have multi-room audio capability with airplay in the rooms I dont have homepods in (or in the case of the living room the appletv+stereo)

You are not going to really “listen to music played in your house” if not home aren’t you? Or want music to distract phone call? Besides, why you need uninterrupted speaker music experience when you take the trash out? Just take your phone, throw the trash, return and resume.
I am not, but my family is going to.
