Aston surveyed their customers and found that quite a lot of them were buying Smart Cars/Minis and other small 'premium' cars as city cars and runabouts.

Wasn't the main reason that it would contribute to reducing the average CO2 figure for the Aston Martin range in line with upcoming European laws?

I was just thinking that...more than anything else, this could be a compliance exercise....which is a very stupid reason to build this little "Aston".

Nothing says a hybrid must be slow. You can make a 1000 hp version if you want.

I have always thought that hybrids should have been introduced as fast and exciting cars that were green, rather than as "eco cars" that were, uh, eco cars. Then the technology would have been sexy and the adoption of the technology would have been faster.

Very true. There is one important limitation though - hybrids exist because they provide better fuel economy and lower emissions than an internal combustion engine alone.

If you flog a hybrid car you lose a lot of that efficiency. A hybrid drivetrain is considerably more complex and expensive (And also usually a bit heavier) than an internal combustion engine of equivalent power by itself. At the moment a hybrid can never be as good a performance car as an identical chassis with just an internal combustion engine.

People want to see amazing fuel economy numbers from hybrids at the moment, not great performance numbers. I think that the internal combustion engine will continue to dominate the performance sector of the market long after alternative solutions become popular for more prosaic cars.

Well... as long as it isn't an attempt by Aston to move their way up the JD Power Survey. heheh.

As a Huge Aston Martin fan, I'll be honest and say, that Cygnet is incredibly cool and modern. It's perfect for middle-classing it about town. Most of you are aware of the current stigma that goes around if you're in a big 'gas-guzzler'. It just doesn't make for a good tone if you meet your pals at SB's in a 3.5T (or in the States in a 6 litre +).

It does look like a Toyota IQ, but you know what, a lot of people love those, even I can see a loveable modernity in them. And I'm not just talking about cars from the sofa, in September I went from a 2.0 BMW to a new 1.6 with efficient dynamics. How many people do you know used to downgrade engine sizes as they got older? Or even were prepared to pay more for a downgrade?

That's the trend, and although some people are still oblivious to it all - the movement is out there.

But really, Aston Martin is a pedigree of British engineering. It's the Bond badge we're all working hard to have. And as the middle ages hit us, we don't want our dream machine to look, or have any association with a cheap run-about. We want to stick our noses up at the green-fingered anti-snobs, because they're the most pretentious hypocrites of all. They're only buying into the save the planet trend to fit in with their fellow yahs. And me and my 100k Aston Martin want you to know that we know it.

As for the availability, well that looks handled well, with supplies to be restricted to previous owners. But demand is what moves the market, and if these things create a impact, I wouldn't be surprised at all to see them produce more.

I find the Honda styling to be very cool. Sort of looks like a VERY updated CRX from a few years ago.

The Aston Martin, on the other hand, is a bit confusing. AM is (as of now) a very sporty brand. Why would they want to broaden the brand appeal this far out from what their existing market perception is? From the branding perspective this is a bit confusing.
