Honda recently announced that owners of 2018-2022 Accord models in the U.S. are now eligible for a wireless Apple CarPlay upgrade option for a fee.

The update can be completed at any Honda dealership in the U.S. for a suggested price of $112, plus a labor fee, according to the announcement. Eligible customers can book a service appointment on their local Honda dealership's website.

Approximately 631,000 Accords with wired-only CarPlay are eligible for the upgrade, said Honda.

"Enhancing the ownership experience and market value of Honda vehicles already in use is a key strategy in pursuit of our goal to have zero environmental impact by 2050," said Honda's sustainability vice president Jay Joseph.

The upgrade also adds wireless Android Auto.

This is a great upgrade that will probably save a few USBC ports from failing.

Honestly I wish they would just fix the bug that causes the whole system to lockup when turn-by-turn directions are talking and someone calls the whole display goes black and needs to be rebooted.

My 2020 Civic does that half the time just when I plug in the phone and Carplay kicks in heh. There's been days on my way to work where I've had to pull the plug from the phone 3 or 4x, and reboot the stereo 3-4x before it starts giving me a screen and I can see my traffic maps. Apple Music still seems to work just fine, but switch it to the Music tab and black screen here we go..

Wow. I am totally impressed by this! I have a 2017 so sucks for me but - the fact that they'd do this is... well... I think only Mazda did something like this in the past? Probably also has updates for the HU!

Why accords and not civics? Is it not the same system? And my 2017 Civic has CarPlay , Wi-Fi and bluetooth so why not that🤷‍♂️ I still remember asking about it when i bought the car in 2017. Time flies.
The 2017 Civic UI looks the same as on my 2017 Accord and - those units run Android 4, I think? People who worked on that already retired. ;-)

Ok, now how about Toyota?
While I’d love this for my 2020 Tacoma, Toyota is historically slow to adopt anything Apple.
Wow
This is sort of amazing honestly

This type of upgrade, this many years post purchase

Major kudos to Honda
While you’re at it, Honda, reissue an electric version of the Element. My favorite car I’ve owned to date.
Such a versatile/capable vehicle.

Just guessing here. Perhaps it is the mechanical interface for the addition of wireless charging that is large enough to fit a Max iPhone?

What’s the advantage of a wireless CarPlay vs the wired one? Considering that maps, etc., use quite a bit of a battery power.
If you aren’t using maps and your phone is already charged there, really isn‘t a need to plug in except for music, which wireless CarPlay would take care of. Especially if you’re going to be in the car for an hour or less.

It is wireless and you have the choice of plugging your phone in or not. There are plenty of times when I am going on a short trip I would not plug my phone in out of convenience.

It also gives you the option of using wireless charger or high speed charger. Most built in usb ports are very slow

I've had wireless CarPlay in one vehicle. The biggest advantage was being able to keep the phone in my pocket, which was great for relatively short trips where charging wasn't necessary. $112 seems reasonable, but I'll be interested to see what the labor cost will be.
