Blimey there's a lot of Nest haters on here.

It strikes me that the Lyric is a bit of desperate attempt by an out of date monolithic company to catch up with the likes of Nest, Ecobee and to a lesser extent Hive (in the UK). On that note is there any plans for a UK/EU launch?

I have to admit, most if not all, of the appeal of a smart thermostat is just the coolness factor.

I'd love to buy something to replace the large rectangular hearing-aid-colored plastic box on my wall. But the price point for something as simple as I need - connect switch when temp falls to "x," with perhaps a few more bells & whistles, would need to be much lower - perhaps under $100.

big market waiting for someone I think...

Well it is nice to have your hearing and air controlled by the location of your phone. If you are on the way home it can remotely turn the heat/AC on. It is definitely better than programable.

Just bought a condo (my first home) and when i saw the 15 year old Ruud dial in there immediataly jumped online to buy a nest v3 coincidentally about an hour before this article appeared... of course with all the bragging about ecobee3 and the clever multi-sensor approach I had to cancel my original order and buy the ecobee3 instead. Here's to hoping I made a wise decision. didn't realize nest was not HomeKit capable. that's a deal breaker for me.

Actually a smart thermostat is the only "smart" thing i'd buy besides a phone. :)
I couldn't care less about a smart tv, smart fridge, smart lights, smart dildo, etc. but i'd love to be able to control the thermostat from my phone. Just yesterday i've returned from my holiday vacation and my house was so cold it took like 10 hours to have 22 degrees inside. :D

First off, congrats on the condo. Secondly, you made the right choice. I switched a few months ago and wish I would have done it sooner. It's made a world of difference in the comfort of our home.

So Ecobee3 just arrived and of course I tore out the ol' Ruud analog and setup the new which was surprisingly easy to do. I was most impressed by the on unit and in app user interfaces that just makes it all a snap to setup. Seems to be working but won't really know for some time until it needs to switch between heat and cool. I have a heat pump in a condo, 2 bedrooms. Put sensors in both bedrooms and the living room where i work. set the master bedroom sensor to be during sleep and away, the second bedroom to just away (nobody ever sleeps there and i don't go in there almost ever), and the living room to home and away (where i work). Setup the schedule to match my wake work bed hours. It was all impressively easy to setup.

I have a few questions:
- shows lower red circle at 72 and higher blue circle at 78 with main temp number sitting at 75. is this 75 the average of the sensors that are enabled ?
- is the target temp the average of the blue and red circle temps ((72 + 78) / 2) => 75 ?
- what is the temp tolerance that it will kick on at, +- 1f ?
- how can you tell what it is doing at the moment, heating or cooling or nothing? i see both flame and snow icons above the 75 temp all the time with neither of them highlighting or anything.
