hooking up optical on my imac

I'm trying to get my optical output to work on my imac. In my Audio Midi set up it says that "output is not supported" under the Audio output settings. Any ideas?

Is it an aluminum iMac?

You need a 3.5mmToslink to Toslink adaptor.
