...and apologies if indeed it is, but...

Just taken delivery of a brand new iMac and have moved all files from old Mini to new mac. Then thought ah....if I now run boot camp & partition the HD, do I need to back up all the files? Or can I partition the HD as it is now with everything on it?

Basically...will partitioning the drive wipe what's currently on it?

Nope. Boot Camp handles this very eloquently. All you do is move a slider hit ok and your done. All your files stay in tact.
