So, this has happened two times now - once last night, and once today. I updated my MacBook Pro early 2020 to Big Sur on release day, so this has occurred after that. I will go to play audio and instead of the audio I get a horrible, loud static noise blaring through the AirPods. If I take them out and try again it goes away. It seems to be at random.

The "auto switching" between AirPods connecting to my iPhone and my Mac also hasn't been working consistently, but after reading other threads that seems to be what everyone has been experiencing. I just have not seen any mention of the static noise issue. I'm guessing it has something to do with Big Sur.

I have an M1 MacBook Air 2020 coming tomorrow, so if I decide to keep it I will post back and update whether or not the issue happens with it, too. I'm just hoping my AirPods aren't failing. I have the standard 2nd gen AirPods with wired charging case. Also, I have not had this issue (yet) when listening to audio from my phone with the AirPods.

There is a programme for this. You can get them replaced.
Do you have a link to this program or further information about this issue? Funny enough, they haven’t done this since I posted this question, but I would like to read more about the issue in case it comes up again.

Go to Apple's site and make an appointment for repair since they are hard to find. My local Apple is booked, so I had to reserve at Best Buy on Apple's site.

What's hard to find? I have the basic AirPods with the regular charging case, and they are not hard to find. I'm not making any appointment for anything right now. Like I said, my AirPods stopped having the issue after I made this thread. I was just wondering where the other poster saw that there was a program for replacing them due to this issue or a link to somewhere online where I could read more about the issue and what causes it in case it does come back.

The appointments were not available in my area at Apple even a week out. I don’t mean the product itself.

This is the link I found btw, so that’s why I made an appt for my AirPods: https://support.apple.com/airpods-pro-service-program-sound-issues

Oh, gotcha. Thanks for the heads up. I wouldn't be going into the store anyway with COVID. Fingers crossed my AirPods keep behaving.

Mine are not the Pros. They are the standard AirPods.
I don’t know about any program for the regular AirPods... but I did use original AirPods before the Pros and never ran into that problem. It’d be worth contacting Apple if it acts up again! ?
