I picked up 4GB (2x2GB sticks) for $54. You could max out a G5 tower with a whopping $420 or so! Which I plan to do.

I've bought ram from non ram "specialists" before (like newegg). And if Digidesign had good prices i wouldn't see any reason to not buy from them. But seeing how their prices are horrible, i can't see anyone doing that.
