I understand that Mac OS X has Apache built in and that I can host a website I put in Library/WebServer/Documents, which will be found at http://myipaddress (I will have a static IP address form my ISP).

If I then want to use my own domain name instead of an IP address, do I just need www.mywebaddress.com to point to myipaddress, which I guess I can do at my registrar's control panel?

Yup, you want to change the A record for your domain to point to myipaddress. Once that's done you'll have to wait a few hours for DNS to propagate and then it should work.

You might have to open ports on your router such as 80 to allow people access to the web server.
