Hi I have edited the /etc/hosts file to send queries to unwanted urls to 127.0.0.1, but it seems it is not working and ignoring the list in the host file.

Here is the hosts list I used: http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm

I'm running mac os x 10.5.6, is there something I am missing, thanks.

Regards,

I went there and didn't see the actual list, I can't say anything for certain until you show it to us because it could simply be formatted wrong.
Code:
##
# Host Database
#
# localhost is used to configure the loopback interface
# when the system is booting. Do not change this entry.
##
127.0.0.1       localhost
255.255.255.255 broadcasthost
::1             localhost
fe80::1%lo0     localhost

127.0.0.1 UnitedFund
127.0.0.1 HCVB
127.0.0.1 firelandsmuseum
127.0.0.1 test
That is what mine looks like, I am running a local server so that is what those last 4 are. What does yours look like? On a different note I wouldn't really do what you are doing there since it can't be turned off for certain sites when it causes issues. There are ad blockers for Firefox and Safari and you can easily add more to the block list and make exceptions.

It's one of the links on the web-page. Here http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.txt

Does your hosts list actually work, or is there a command I need to issue to have os x look at that list by default. Any good advertisement blockers for safari, I just like the fact of now even dl the advertisements at all, cutting them off at the root.
