All iPads Hot Take: All iPads should be a uniform 12”

I’ve owned both the 11 and 13 inch iPads and I love them both for different reasons. 11” is just more easily handled, but the screen on the 13” is glorious. Keeping both is too expensive. I think if the size was a uniform 12” across the entire line (Pro, Air, and standard) it would really clear up the confusion which to buy (and which to return). Of course the Mini would stick around too because it’s own category of sorts. A 12” iPad wouldn’t be too much more as to be an inconvenience to 11” users and I don’t think artists and others who use the 13” would mind (too much) about downsizing a screen a little bit in the long run.

That would be an awful idea. Make a 12” model maybe, but do not drop the 11” and 13” model. And I honestly would like to see them release a 14” and possibly even 16” model in the future. Would they be as nice as a “simple tablet experience”? Probably not. But for digital artists on the go, they would be great. It would be kind of like a Cintiq, but way better.

more choice is better. I love my 11", my husband loves his 13" and wouldn't mind a bigger one still.

11” is a better size if you primarily want to use your iPad Pro as a tablet.
13” is a better size if you want to use your iPad Pro more like a MacBook Pro replacement, or compliment.

For me, my tablet is an iPad Mini and my computer is a 13” iPad Pro.

The standard sized iPads were good all around devices. The screen size was decent yet the iPad itself was also decently sized for periodic on-the-go mobility. I found the Mini too small for me even though I know quite a few people like its compact size for portability. It’s also my least favourite iPad because I just find it weird the smallest iPad isn’t the cheapest and most affordable. It’s more like a Mini Air.

I love my M2 iPad Air 13. It’s my most used device. I love the screen size for watching videos and reading. I rarely if ever take it out of the house so it’s extra bulk isn’t an issue because I don’t need it for mobility.

The iPad Mini is for those who want ultimate compactness and portability and not sacrificing performance. It’s definitely better than having to use your phone for looking things up, prolonged reading or whatever else it can do better than a phone. But it’s not ideal for everything because it can’t fit in your pocket like a phone. Although I have zero interest in a folding phone this could be where a phone and iPad Mini meet in terms of usefulness.

The mainstream sized 10.9 iPads (base, Air and Pro) are ideal sized all purpose iPads. Not surprisingly are they the most popular models. They’re good sized screens and not heavy, until you put a case on them wherein then they start feeling a bit weighty for carrying around.

The 12.9 iPads are great if you want a great screen for watching/reading content and playing games and you’re not interested in taking it on-the-go often.

Samsung tablets offer 8.7-14.6 in. screens. Samsung’s advantage lays in having a lower price entry point and the ability to add extra storage memory with Micro SD cards. A 14.6 screen is quite a large tablet, distinctly larger than Apple’s 12.9, but that added bulk makes it even less appealing in terms of mobility. It’s great for stay-at-home content use though.

Apple must be doing something right because the iPad lineup outsells Samsung Galaxy tablets near 2 to 1 globally.

Yeah, I upgraded from an 11” to a 13” iPad Pro last year, and I definitely was more careful about the sleeve I chose. The first time around with the 11”, I got one that only had one exterior pocket that was Velcro. Big mistake. It didn’t give me much flexibility for carrying extra accessories, and I regretted that sleeve didn’t have better pockets, though it was great otherwise. So this time around, I got a better one with more exterior zipper pockets. It’s a lot nicer for carrying accessories. And it also does have a carry handle, not a should strap, but I don’t find that I really need one, so much happier with this setup. I think the sleeve you carry your iPad in is something that often is kind of an afterthought. But it can make a big difference. 👍🏻

Ask about this in an artist forum or subreddit.
That one inch goes a long way in certain professional applications, something like the notched screens do with the menubar on MacBooks.
If I was you I would personally mind if both my iPads would be one device that’s worse at all things that made each device better at their size. Too big for comfort, too small for productivity.

This is not a good idea as it would upset those who want a format that will fit in a messenger bag and it would upset those who want to analyze shot quality. I would go the opposite route with 11” and 14 or 15”. If the new foldable ipad is 18” there will be a segment gap.

Yup, and at the same token we should standardize on 1 size iPhone and while we're at it, 1 size MBP and 1size MBA, would eliminate all that confusion out there ...
Who cares about different needs, after all we all have 2 hands and 1 head with 2 eyes, screw what other people want, it's all about you and no one else ... and while we're at it, standardize TV sizes and car sizes too ...

I'm actually in the middle of deciding on 11" iPP vs 13" upgrading from a 11" 2020, so 12" would work for me perfectly. That said, Apple would probably would never cut down on the product lineup and more likely keep both sizes and increase screen size on each in the future-- maybe 11.5" and 13.5" displays.

As I said upthread. The 13 is great as a stay-at-home device. But not so much for on-the-go. I really like my iPad Air 13, but I never need to take it anywhere.

I don't find the size of my 13" Pro to be at all burdensome. I always take it and leave the Mini at home as I like the large display.

I think having the right travel bag for something like the 13” iPad Pro makes a difference as to how often one might take it on the ‘go’. I recently purchased a 13" to try alongside my 11" M5 to see if I liked the 13 better or the 11. I mainly use the iPad as a tablet but was considering if the 13 would suit my use case better.

After trying the 13, I returned the 13 and kept the 11. For the way I use an iPad, the 11" is just a better fit for me. If I need the larger screen, I use my MacBook Pro. I'm glad we have the choice as there may come a day when the 13 suits me better.

My main use of the iPad is browsing the web, email, and light remote access (via Splashtop) to some remote systems. If I have heavy duty computing to do, I use the MacBook.

Also, @Apple_Robert, I have purhased many items from SF Bags, and they are absolutely top quality and one of the best case and accessory makers I have found. I have one of their backpacks that I use for my gear.

For me, the 13” is a desktop drawing tablet (I’d actually like for them to release a bigger screen) and the 11” is an ultra portable tablet computer. I wouldn’t want anything larger than 11” for portable use.
