I doubt you were ever going to buy it, will be near 8 months before you get a 11S as that’s what it will be, and won’t have a finger print sensor, will still have a notch which is a non issue anyway.

Exactly! I could have really used this advice, like 20 posts ago. 😋

But seriously, I didn’t realize THE NOTCH was on the chopping block. That’s very exciting news. As is the return of fingerprint ID. 3D camera is cherry. I wasn’t expecting any of those things, and if I’m looking at dropping this amount of cash on a phone... Makes sense to wait.

Crisis averted. (Or postponed, at least.)

I hate to be "that guy" but there were plenty of rumors on here that the notch was history (in-screen Touch ID) before the 11 Pro was revealed.

Well the base iPhone 11 Pro is £999 or $999 for those across the rather large pond. A 256GB 11 Pro model that is 5~ months old is a good deal whatever if it’s below the 999 mark.

However your contempt for the notch makes me think you’re better off buying a used or new iPhone 8. If you’re travelling, do you think carrying an expensive phone like an iPhone 11 is a good idea?

I don’t. Your call!

Loving the replies. Just to clarify, it's a 7-month warranty. (Phone is 5 months old.)

So we're talking $250 USD off from the cheapest retail price ($1149). I've never had a phone fail on me and have only ever had batteries replaced in my phones (no hardware failures), so the warranty stuff is great but it's mostly a peace of mind benefit.

Throw in my guilty environmental conscience into the mix and the used one does have some appeal. (As y'all can see that phone is in super clean condition.)

Yeah, pretty much. I've only ever used milked Applecare to swap my phone out for a fresh refurb before it expired.

The other way to look at it is those $250 saved would be there to cover at least one nasty out-of-warranty repair should the necessity arise later...

I currently have Apple care on my 2018 iPad Pro, Apple Watch series 4 ( I bought bear launch) and my iPhone 11 Pro. It already saved me $300 since it covered a warranty issue after the 12 month warranty with my Apple Watch. Plus with phones it could cover theft and loss which is my primary reason why I got it. $15 a month for it is worth it. If you lose or get it stolen $299 is cheaper then $999+

Take the $169 hit and get it brand new in the colour you want, IMO.

Also invest in a Leather Case and Tempered Glass Screen Protector and enjoy your new baby on holiday!

Those leather cases are the worst $60 bucks you’ll ever spend. Also not everybody cares about screen protectors. I bought the leather ones before and while look nice after a while they look like trash. I’ve gotten the red and blue ones before and Meh .

"Personally, I would opt for neither and instead get an Apple refurbished X or XS. Put those savings toward the major form factor and feature update coming this September."

Meh. I wanted a 11 pro because I don’t care for the 12. The 12 pro by all accounts will be bigger and I like the 5.8 screen size

It is depending on the rumor you want to listen to

Yeah the trend toward 6.1” screens in those rumours is worrisome for me too, I admit.

I admit it’s probably not the wisest to take Forbes rumours at face value. And while many of us want to believe that this X design is due for a replacement after 3 iterations, really not a whole lot changed from the 6 to the 8 (that’s at least 4 iterations) so it wouldn’t be unheard of for the 12 (or 11S) to keep the same chassis. And notch. 😑

I appreciate your realistic expectations.

I already bought a case and screen protector for my non-purchased 11 Pro, so trust me, the intent was there.

But yes, I do still bristle at the asking price (2-3 times what I paid for any previous phone) and the part of my soul that brings me to this website semi-regularly hates the idea of paying full price for a phone that’s almost halfway through its product cycle.

My 6S still works admirably (albeit with a slightly compromised battery life) so I can afford to take a wait and see approach and resort to bringing a separate camera with me... It’s just not quite as fun. :/

Plenty buy last years model when new one is released too, or just before, @Tsepz did above. 5 months in is nothing. Keep kicking those tyres you will get one sooner or later.

Hi folks,

I'm gonna be doing some traveling this year and have decided to go camera-phone-only instead of bringing a dedicated camera along this time. Count me among those who hate the notch (I'm 100% convinced J. Ive does too) and would buy a supercharged SE in a heartbeat for the form factor, but I'm willing to live with these concessions for now.

I have an opportunity to pick up a cosmetically perfect used 256GB 11 Pro (unlocked) for about $980 USD. I've done my research and am aware of the pitfalls and safeguards of buying used. The seller is super trustworthy (meet at Apple Store, original receipt, etc.) The phone itself was a Day 1 purchase, so it has ~7 months of apple care left. Battery health is 98%. It otherwise has no issues and a quick run through diagnostics should catch anything that isn't immediately apparent.

OPTION B: I'll be spending some time in Oregon next week and can pick up a brand new phone for $1149 (tax free).

Hence my 1st World dilemma: Would you sacrifice 5 months of warranty and 2% battery health to save $169?

Please keep your answers as snarky as possible. ;)

I heard Wuhan in China 🇨🇳 is particularly beautiful this time of the year. The cherry trees are in blossom and the streets are colorful and full of life 😄
