I can only test this on cycling. I have had several garmin bike computers including watches and my bike has a built in computer that also has a power meter so it knows how much effort I am putting out. they both have heart rate and cadence to. my bike computer most likley is the most accurate since it knows how much effort I am putting out and my heart rate. usually my commute to work is around 220 calories burned. the garmins tend to be about 50 calories more. ( I wish I could connect it to a power meter to see how well it matched) but I tested the watch so I could get more heart rate info into the heath app. well apple gives me over 400 calories burned its a huge difference between the two.
I wish I could test it on walking but I seldom walk anywhere now we ride everywhere.

I wear a wrist Heart rate monitor. plus f course the garmin watches had it too. my older Apple Watch would miss any peaks because it only checked very 3 minutes. the 6 is better about that now. but using apple cycling app sucks it does not pause when you stop at lights at all so it throws your average off.

Interesting I used the outside cycling exercise all the time together with strength training one. I’ve never bothered to try to find out if it’s measuring everything accurately against another product.

Generally the reviews on YouTube are all positive about the measurement compared to a chest based heart rate monitor.

I had yesterday a similar experience:

Cross-Trainer
30:30 Min.

Chest heart rate (Garmin Dual…): 136 average HF, 144S max FS, 364cal
Apple Watch heart rate: 135 average HF, 144 max FS, 304cal (total) and 255cal (activity).

Of course, I used both parallel.

What's wrong with the Apple Watch?! It is calibrated, I extra checked this and the profile are the same.

I used strata on my ride home and it was close to my bike 200 calories. mt watch is more like what I get on my garmin if I forget my heart rate monitor. it is just going by speed.

I find my Watch 6 to be wildly erratic when calculating Active Calories. Here are two similar cycling trips:

Yet one ride has 66% more Active Calories than the other. Granted, the heart rate and average speed are different, but not enough to account for an Active Calorie difference that great.

I think the problem is the Apple Watch isn't a sports watch. when I was using a garmin watch is was far better. I had real time heart rate always even when not doing a workout. the watch would record a ride pretty much the same as my garmin bike computer. it would hook up to ANT+ device too it could also broadcast your heart rate. I also notice flights climbed is also way off sometimes on my watch. I donor know if it is getting the info when I ride or what. but most days I would be lucky to go up two flights of stairs.

The Apple Watch may not be a sports watch, but they certainly market it as an accurate fitness tracker:

When it comes to staying fit, knowledge is power. Get inspiration to keep moving and track your workout metrics more precisely than ever — in the water, at the gym, or out on the road. Series 6 is Apple Watch at its best. To help you be your best.

I don't much care if the Active Calorie calculation is real-world accurate. All I really want is some consistency from day to day.

cycling may just be a problem. its all I do besides walk and lastly I don't really walk I ride everywhere.

right ow with it winter its a pain to use my watch the nI ride with my long sleeves and rain coat. but it sure seems strava does a better then apple cycling. I wish its would auto detect cycling like it does running and such.
