I still use my iphone 4. I feel like I really need to upgrade after reading this thread haha

No, you're fine. I was lucky to get a good deal on my used iPhone 5 but if not I would have been very happy to keep using my 4. It has the same quality screen and can do everything the 5 can do except Siri which goes unused by 90% of iPhone users. It was a fantastic investment for anyone who bought one in 2010 ... It's a 3 year old device that while a little slow now is basically still a high end smartphone. Unless you can get a great deal on a newer iphone I say keep it!

I loved my iPhone 4. It was the first smart phone I had. I queued up on launch day. I was going to get the 3GS and started reading about the 4 on this site (my original plan was to get the 3GS when the 4 came out and save some cash). But after reading all the leaks, and watching Steve Jobs at the launch I knew it was going to be the phone for me.

Getting the iPhone 5 never felt the same really. Partly because the difference from 4 to 5 was pretty minor compared to dumb phone to iPhone 4.
I won't be getting the 5s unless something unexpected happens at launch.

iPhone 4 is a classic.

I've gone back a number of times and watched SJ announce it. At the time it was amazing. It's also a little strange knowing the antenna issue that would later crop up.

There won't be a 'game changer' from Apple or any other company again for a long time. Why do you think they are now looking at wearables such as glasses and watches which EXTEND your smartphone experience?

The 4 was by far the weakest update besides he 3G. This is how apple makes money, theres plenty of people who thinks a new design equals a revolution even when the internals are the same recycled garbage from yesteryear.

The 4 was a terrible product, which is why it degraded rapidly with the next ios version. Glad I skipped the 4, the only one I've skipped. I didn't fall for apples bs marketing on that pathetic "upgrade"

Yeah I tend to agree. There were some aspects of it that were impressive, but from a tech perspective I thought it was anything but awesome. As I've previously mentioned, the camera was pretty abysmal and for me and a lot of others that is an important part of the smartphone.

I have to disagree with most here. While I definitely loved the display, I don't think the phone had much else going for it.

The form factor wasn't great, it just didn't sit comfortably in my hand. The glass back was more fragile than aluminum backs of prior generations. The antenna issue was overstated, but I was able to reproduce it and led to some amounts of distrust amongst users.

To each their own, but I think the 3gs is the best phone apple has ever made in terms of form factor, performance, and usability in relation to its competitors.

I can respect your opinion because you aren't attacking others. I just like the look and feel of the 4/4S in my hands personally.

the iPhone 4 was my first phone and yes it was the most excited I've been for a Apple product other getting my Retina MacBook Pro.

I've yet to experience that wow factor from another iPhone yet and as someone said earlier it probably won't be coming from whatever is being released in the coming days.

The wow factor is over I believe. The 4S was met with disappointment because people were expecting the 5. Then they "re-design" the 5 only to be met with "scuff-gate." The truth is by the time an iPhone is released nowadays its already "outdated."

This year we may get two new phones, the 5S and 5C. The 5S we know what to expect... Something incremental. The 5C might be a little different, but by leaks I get the feeling that it's an iPod Touch with the ability to make calls... While it might be a nice option it just doesn't scream wow to me... To me the iPhone 4 did...

The design of the iPhone 4 when it was first released was incredible. It was clean, it was functional, and it was minimalist. I ended up not purchasing an iPhone 5 due to the redesign. The new design of the 5 made it way too complicated, a drop in materials quality, and design mistakes like a non-flush screen to the chamfered edge (serious oversight because that's why you would have a chamfered edge in design). The iPad mini fixed the chamfered edge issue with a flush screen and I'm hoping the 5S will have the fix too. In another generation, I hope Apple goes back to a very minimalist design that can get constructed well.

The 4 looked great, and the screen was a step forward, but as others have said, it was a weak upgrade internally and of course the antenna issues were an embarrasment to apple. They may have been overstated, but they were real. Worst of all, even complete laypeople could understand the flaws in that design, and being caught out publicly in that way damaged apple to this day IMO.

The 4S was the much greater phone. A real step change in speed and graphical power, and of course the antenna - though cosmetically similar - was completely re engineered by someone who knew what they were doing, and suddenly the design made sense and actually worked exceptionally well. At the same time, the camera went through a revolution with the first decent optical design (sadly better than the purple-flaring 5), and of course there was Siri, which contrary to popular belief was not simply a software feature, but also involved new noise cancelling hardware and an extra proximity sensor.

For me, the 4S was probably the best iPhone yet, and I'm not surprised its rapidly gaining "classic" status around here.

I agree with you about the 4S. It's also the last iPhone with the 30 pin and 3.5" screen. If I upgrade to the 5S (not decided yet, I love my 4S) then I am definitely keeping my 4S as a backup and as a personal collector item, lol.

I love how the 4S was simply a 4 on steroids. The 4/4S remains my favorite iPhone design yet and in my opinion the 4S has been the biggest upgrade in the history of iPhones; went to dual core, had an nice camera upgrade. The 5 from the 4S wasnt a huge leap, unless you're talking hardware. The 4 was a huge leap from the 3G as far as hardware too. But the 4S has been the biggest leap from the previous generation, when it comes to internals.

My 4S is still so fast for a 2 year old phone, it hasn't been a bore yet. I'm sad to let it go if I upgrade.

But 4 from 3GS had double the ram. That was nice even if the CPU upgrades weren't significant especially powering those pixels

I don't understand the huge love for the 4S. On paper, it upgraded lots of components, but in reality it didn't feel much quicker than the 4 (on iOS 5, at least.)

And Siri was just a bit.... Meh.

The 4S is definitely noticeably faster than the 4 and can handle the newest software a lot better. I don't understand why the 4S always gets so much hate. It's got that great design with beefier internals and a camera that even after two years takes pics better than many other smartphones. Maybe I love the 4S because its my first iPhone, the original for me, but when I handle my sisters 4 it's painfully slow and outdated feeling. I don't feel that with the 4S at all.

I love my 4. It was laggy sometimes on 6.1.3 but now that I downgraded to 5.0.1 I just forgot how good this Iphone is.

Have kept my iPhone 4 for music and use a 5 constantly. Visible performance differences now but I really do like the iPhone 4. One noticeable bad point was the weight, feels like a cube of solid glass with a metal band around it!

From an engineering perspective the way it was put together was far greater than the 2g, 3g and 3gs. To this day if I drop the phone, smash the front screen and rear I can repair it for £40 and carry on. All the other parts are dirt cheap too.

I always found battery life good, as always on iOS 6.1.3 it runs worse than if I'd kept it on iOS 4. I wish there was a legitimate way to go back.
