Depends. Their DC10s, MD10s, and MD11s won't have the distance, so if they are being used (more than likely not, as those are being phased out from that route), they would land at PANC. Their A306s wouldn't be used there, either. But FDX is going heavy on the B777-ERF and LRF models, so they could skip PANC altogether. Keep in mind that from VHHH, they would be traveling with the wind, so they could skip it. On the opposite route, they'd need to stop.

Now, consider this.. we're lucky that FDX is using B777s for us in the US. Imagine having your phone onboard a 50 - 60 year old Ilyushin, Tupolev, or Yak. I cringe when I see those sometimes, as I wonder when they are truly going to fall apart. At least they do keep up on some of their Antonovs.

Hell, if a Soviet jet is going to fall out of the sky, I'd rather the iPhone I ordered be on it than me ;)

Quiet!? You clearly haven't had the misfortune to fly in the cheap seats near the back of one of these planes!

Actually, I flew on row 38 on a recent trip (I think the last row is 40 or 41) and it was mesmerizingly quiet. Much better than the B747s I'd flown earlier. :)

Of course, it would have been better if British Airways didn't keep their aircraft so shabbily maintained  the planes are dirty and could definitely use a tune-up.

It's a good thing they have security escorting the phone every step of the way. Otherwise, there might be a leak and we'd see the phone ahead of time. Oh, wait....

Oddly enough, Snafu was a Colecovision game as well. I remember playing it back in my younger days. :)

Yes!!!

Someone else who remembers Intellivision, and knows that Intellivison ruled!

They (the Blue Sky Rangers; original game developers) re-released some of the games called Intellivision Lives as well as the companion Intellivision Rocks for PS2, PS3, PC, and XBox. Best gaming console I ever had. I had at least 100 of those games. They are planning to release their entire catalog, last I read on their mailing list.

I wish that I never got rid of it. Nintendo killed it for me, as I truly realized that with the NES, Newer != better.

Hold For Delivery

But isn't FedEx Smartpost where FedEx takes the package from the source to the local US Post Office and then the USPS takes the final delivery?

I hate seeing FedEx get a shipment 3 miles away and then see the USPS say it could take 3-5 days from that point.

Though I get it, FedEx has nice local hubs everywhere and the USPS doesn't extend too much in transport costs...it just irks me as an end user.

For our iPhone 5, the product was actually delivered to our local hub by Wednesday and then set there. They use FedEx because they have a "hold for delivery" until a certain day. Our FedEx driver was so funny since we were the last house on his route. He said more than half his truck was iPhones!

USPS is days faster then FEDEX smartpost...

FedEX does most of the heavy lifting for Smartpost. FedEx picks it up and delivers batches to post offices to deliver locally to addresses. Smartpost is designed as a cheap method, it's not Priority Mail.

If you live in Alaska and you order from Apple you most likely know how crazy Fedex Logistics is....

9 or of 10 times I order a Apple product it leaves China lands in Anchorage then leaves Anchorage and goes down to the lower 48 and gets shipped back to Anchorage?!?!

When you check to tracking site and it shows it is only about 4 miles away and the next time you check it is 1000+ miles away.

That is any logistics company. I work in that field and directly with FedEx/UPS. It makes sense if you look at all the details but to a casual observer it's like "HUH?"

Correct on all counts. i forget what UPS calls their similar service.

Every iPhone I've had was delivered by UPS.

Does apple use both carriers for a new iPhone launch?

Did you order direct from Apple or your cellular company?

I agree.
I last flew on an Emirates 777, sat on the last row (I quite like that, especially on night flights) and although the 777 isn't as quiet as an A-380 (which I flew with this summer), it sure is much quieter than the 747-400, especially an old BA one I flew with 2 years ago.

OTOH, I absolutely adore the 747. The King of the sky. For many decades!
Such a classic airplane. Made the world truly a smaller place, for so long! The 777 and the A-380 (Whale of the sky) are just more of the same.

Back on topic.

That's amazing. Wonder what the insurance is for that flight. No way that much retail value could be on one plane without insurance.

I'm sure Apple has it's own insurance, but any package shipped with UPS or FedEx is automatically assigned a 'Declared Value' by the carrier of up to $100, unless you pay for more coverage.

Basically, if they carrier cannot prove the shipment was delivered, you can obtain up to $100 + shipping cost back as a refund. if you can prove the value of the shipment.

So, buy that calculation, FedEx is already on the hook for 450,000 X $100 plus $242,000. So FedEx would be liable for $45,242,000 automatically.

This is assuming Apple is using Direct Distribution and each of those 450,000 iPhone is an individual shipment.

most likely a lot of those are cases of phones going to retail locations as well. In that case, FedEx only has a liability of up to $100 per case.

Thank you for contributing your astute insight into this topic. A class member here.

But a totally valid point. Is the the forum of 'YES' to all things Apple?

Beautiful logistics.

It's amazing how it averages to only $0.54 per iPhone for expedited shipping.

I would guess the cost more per mile goes up exponentially the closer it gets to a person's door. Still, .54 isn't bad at all, and looks even better as a cost-to-weight price when compared to what human traffic costs :)

There's an app for that.

Ah, but unfortunately he still hasn't received his iPhone shipment, so he can't use that app.

How would applecare+ insure a shipment of 450,000 iphones for Apple?

I'm pretty sure that was a joke :p

It's a good thing they have security escorting the phone every step of the way. Otherwise, there might be a leak and we'd see the phone ahead of time. Oh, wait....

The security is so nobody steals them. When you're shipping billions of dollars of merchandise, security is a very good idea.

Apple uses FedEx and UPS. Neither company can deliver all the release day iPhones in one day by themselves. I typically get FedEx shipping for smaller Apple products, personally. I've gotten UPS for the occasional computer though.

Same. Usually it's UPS for anything from laptops and up. Anything smaller and it's FedEx. I'm sure Apple has good contracts with both. Only place that has always sent me FedEx no matter the size is MacMall.

Although to be fair when I bought my iPhone via Apple.com in late December of 2012 it came via a local courier service to the USPS, which dropped it off in my secure postal box. I think they shipped it from the nearest Apple Store, maybe. A lot of companies that are nation wide, but have stores in some states do that for fairly local mail orders.

Preorders should help considerably for iPhone 5c to gauge which pukey colors will be most popular.

I wish the iPhone 5s came in gold+black.

I'm kinda wishing the same thing as well..

though old gold, black, and white were my high school's colours, so I can see every kid there wanting each colour of the 5s.

USPS contracts Fedex to do their shipments.

The FEDEX part is the slow part, then they blame USPS.

I think most of the time Apple use Fedex for international shipments, UPS for domestic. I could be wrong.

Ah OK. Well I work at UPS so I guess I'll find out soon enough.
