If they're anything like the CX-300, they'll be excellent - amazing sound quality, good bass, etc. - until they start losing volume, after about six months, and eventually stop outputting sound all-together. I've had this happen to me with two separate pairs of them.

Sounds like an isolated incident, I haven't had that happen to me and have been using my CX300s extensively for over a year. I think Sennheiser's have 1 year warranties anyway, send it back?

To the OP, I can say that Sennheiser's are really good products both sound quality and build so I would not be worried about yours pooping out for a long time...

I love my cx300s (prefer em to my Shure ec2s). All my family now have them too. Not one problem.

The cx300 was heavily counterfeited at the time. Make sure you get them from a decent Sennheiser supplier (Amazon are usually the cheapest anyway - get em there).

I don't know about the cx500. I was hoping they'd adopt the new iPhone style headphone standard. Then I'd stump up. My cx300 are modified to fit but I'd rather not do that for the more expensive cx500s.

there are various checks you can try, well there was on ebay for the cx-300's anyway as when I bought my 300's I knew about counterfeit ones.

At the end of reading all about the copies, at the end of it I just added my rule whereas if they are too cheap then they are copies!

For the cx-300's you could tell with the alu pieces on the end as i think the copies were plastic, headphone jack were different from the originals also.
Not to mention the most important of all was that the copies really did sound crap!

+1 on the CX300s: great sound and they're holding up fine after the 18 months since I got them. I imagine the same or better for the CX500s...

I've got the PX100's, They are not the ear bud kind(I can't stand them) and they are very good sounding. I've had them for a couple of years and have been the best earphones I've ever used.

I have a set. Other then having the first actually useful inline volume bar (actually has resistence) I'm not that impressed with them. They're alright, but not worth the $80 I spent on them.

The CX300's were my first sennheiser purchase, and i was amazed at how powerful these small earphones were. They were also far more comfortable than previous in-ears i had purchased. Since then I've always trusted sennheiser products and have bought more of their products. I expect the CX500's will be great.

    volume lost - problem found

Headphones are ok. Here's the solution. Several months ago I sent back to the service a pair of CX300, after noticing that the sound in one ear is much lower than in another. Now the problem repeated again. The service called me and told that headphones are dirty of wax inside the metallic mesh(externally, after removing the tips they looked ok). So they should be cleaned with glass cleaning solution or something like this. Didn't tried this myself, but definitely will do. Good luck!

I have a pair and they're great. The sound quality is great - heavy on the bass but overall acceptable sound balance, crisp sound, good depth of sound. The sound isolation is fine and these IEMs can be quite loud if you turn the volume up. The sound gets warmer after a break-in period.

Overall they do seem a bit fragile though, especially the thin wires but are fine if you take care of them.

How cheap? If it is like $20 with shipping? Amazon.com is still way cheaper than Future Shop which sells CX-300 ii for $100+ but this one http://cgi.ebay.ca/Sennheiser-CX300...Accessories&hash=item41562d96fd#ht_1372wt_932 is a power seller so I'm guessing it wouldn't be fake?
