I would never use the same external disk for both Time Machine and CCC (if that's what you're doing). IMO, the whole idea is to maintain separate backups. I also have an external 2TB SSD that I use for storage, in addition to my 2TB internal SSD (and I'm *still* almost out of space!). In my case, I include that external SSD in Time Machine backups, because it's a data drive. If an external disk is only used for backups, I can't see any reason to include it in Time Machine.
I use an old Mini as a file and Time Machine server on my LAN, so that's where my Time Machine backups go. I also have an external USB SSD that I use for bootable CCC backups. I never use my backup disks for anything except backups, and never mix Time Machine with CCC on the same disk.
