If you were looking an iPad with ProMotion and a previous gen iPad without a ProMotion display and you were only shown the screen portion of the device. Would you be able to tel which one has the ProMotion display or is it not really noticeable during day to day usage? Where are the advantages of a ProMotion display noticed most?

In everything!

Once you go high refresh rate, you never go back. I overclocked my 60 Hz monitor to 80 Hz and I am wondering why didn't I do this earlier? Switching back to 60 Hz looks HIDEOUS. Why is 60 Hz industry standard? That needs to change!

If 80 Hz looks this better, 120 Hz looks even better.

I say, you need to see to believe it. Once you get the iPad with ProMotion display, you will see what we all have been talking about.

Why in the world didn’t Apple incorporate the ProMotion display into the iPhone 11 Pro then?

Because they have problem finding 120 Hz OLED panels, probably.

The bigger question to me is, why aren't there 120 Hz Macs there already? At least laptops. I agree that 120 Hz 5K panel might be tricky to make and would be expensive, but 1440p 120 Hz panels already exist for some time now.

Interesting, So going back to the initial question I asked in this thread, in your opinion there isn’t enough difference to the point that you wouldn’t be able to tell which is a ProMotion iPad compared to an older iPad if you could only look at the display area or the device (because if you saw the entire device you would easily know which is the new and old ipad by looking at the exterior of the iPad form factor)

Does it take more GPU power? It has to push many pixels on 4K display. Also needs very fast response time IPS screen. Are there any in that size? Also don't know if Apple considers it worth the investments. It helps sell iPads, and maybe iPhones in the future, but Macs are such low volume products.

When it comes to promotion you will have people that will tell you it’s the best thing that has ever happened to ipad, that you cannot go back and even get angry at people who don’t agree with them... And people that have a very different, almost opposite opinion. I have noticed this over and over... In the Apple store I had a hard time even noticing promotion. So I thought maybe it’s because I didn’t have one at home. Now I have the 10.5 (actually writing from it now) and... while I can see it when I look for it, like trying to scroll fast back and forth... I barely notice and care... Can I go back to my first gen pro? Of course. If they told me would you buy the 10.5 with pro-motion for 550 or without for 500, I would not hesitate to get the one for 500... as, again, I barely notice and care about it. I still use my 9.7 very often and in choosing which one to use promotion is not a factor. Factor is do I need the additional screen size? Do I have to hold it in my hand enough that 9.7 is better because it’s lighter?
Speakers for me are way more important than promotion, I cannot go back to normal speakers (that’s why with my minis I only use airpods).

Prepare for the combo breaker.. (edit: ok guess I read sloppily, I’m not the first to be somewhat negative :))

It’s ok.. nothing more. Quite noticeable but hardly earth shattering. I have no issue going back to 60hz devices in-between.

I do like getting an even divider/lowered hz for 24p content, though.

You would notice it immediately. It is such a dramatic difference that anyone would notice it.

if you can’t notice the difference, I suggest with absolute sincerity, you get your eyes checked. It is not a subtle difference at all.

See when I said above that opinions are so different and extreme on this subject that some people barely notice it and other say is so dramatic that you are not normal if you don't immediate notice it...

I mean, it’s allright but not something you’d necessarily pay for. It’s one of those things you expect on tech. I mean it costs them f*** all to implement 😊

To be frank, unless you're an artist that uses the Apple Pencil heavily, not much.
I have the iPad Pro 10.5" with Pro motion. Although it feels silky smooth for the first few days, I got used to it, and don't feel it to be special anymore. Moving around to different devices without pro motion (iPad mini 5, various phones, etc) don't really feel like a big deal for me. Seriously, it's one of those things that's nice to have but not a dealbreaker. Sure, in general it gives the general sense of smoothness, but even my iPad mini 5 feels smooth enough for me (iOS is).

But if you're an Apple Pencil user, yes, it would be quite a treat with Pro Motion. (Or if you're someone who scrolls a lot).

ProMotion is instantly obvious to me.

That said, even though I think it’s obvious, it’s not a make-or break feature for me. Like @pika2000, I think it’s more a nice-to-have bonus but not critical. I value other iPad Pro features much more.

Noticeable? Yes. Deabreaker? Probably no. I'd compare it to an iPhone 8 vs 8+ retina display - the 8+ renders in @3x retina and shows it on a 401ppi panel, the 8 renders in @2x retina and shows it on a 326ppi panel. If they're side by side you can see the difference, but if you're using an 8 on it's own it's still a perfectly nice screen. This is far removed from the transition from the non retina 3GS to the retina 4 which I've seen some people try to compare it to.

It's definitely noticeable. It's also definitely not a big deal worth spending hundreds extra to get.

I've spoiled myself by getting a 144Hz monitor and the iPad Pro at 120Hz. So, for me, looking at a 60Hz display is very noticeable now. If the next generation iPad for some reason went back to non 120Hz, I'd consider that a major setback for me, personally.
