I live in Seoul and the Apple Maps coverage here is horrible. Google Maps however is very helpful. I have the Google Maps app for my normal map viewing but whenever I open an app that uses a map it defaults to Apple Maps.

I seriously am taking the metro today instead of the bus because I can't see which bus will take me to where I need to go.

How can I disable apple maps as my default? Is there a Cydia customization?

No it doesn't MapsOpener just opens links in Google Maps. It doesn't force Google Maps to be default when you use a map in a different app.

As far as I know you can't change that at the moment, even with a jailbreak. Maps in third party apps use Apple's Map API (Mapkit?) so unless a hack is developed that redirects all those API calls to somewhere else each individual developer would have to change the app to use Google's maps API or another Maps API.

As far as I know, no such hack exists

Apple knows what's best for you and doesn't what you to change your default maps app.

So yeah, you have to jailbreak.

My phone is jailbroken. If you read my post carefully you would notice that.

And the bus app that I'm using hasn't upgraded since I updated to iOS6. I'm certain the app just access whatever map is default.

Wow this really brings back memories. I remember when Microsoft was sued by the federal government (and subsequently by some states) for bundling their browser with their operating system, forcing Microsoft to allow other browsers to be installed/integrated with the OS.

We should have the option to install other browsers, map apps, etc. to replace the default ones with full functionality. Amazing how times have changed. I guess the government loves Apple.

Ah, you're right! Sorry--I thought that's what you wanted--but now I see your point...

Still, it's a small step forward--can't expect toooo much from Apple in openness, can we?

One big difference, Microsoft bascially had a monopoly on the PC OS share.
ios is not anywhere near where microsoft was as far as percentage of marketshare goes.

If you want to use Siri for directions, I believe if you say give me directions to so and so and then at the end add on "by transit" it will give you an option to click on google maps, best fix for me so far.

What you are asking though does not seem to be available yet.

I was just going to say this. I say 'Via Transit' but not sure if it matters.

Just tested it, doesn't matter. When I ask though, it gives me the option to choose Google Maps or Waze and also shows App store apps that I can download.

I don't use navigation often, so that doesn't matter much to me.

browser changer will do it it has an option to force Google Maps to be default
but it still not iOS6 compatible
you can try it on ios6 but it will cause safe mode when asking siri about locations.

I'd like to see something that does the opposite, forces everything to open in Apple maps. Apple maps has been wonderful for me and I'm not downloading Google anything.

Hah you clearly worked on maps
Because it's so inferior to g maps it's not funny
I can't tell you the number of times
I've been dumped into it because Apple sucks and forces
You to use their crap when there is better stuff out there
Only to have it misdirect me or have such bad ui Or ux
That I had to literally struggle to get the info I needed

Digging up a 2 year old thread to not really post anything worthwhile...yeah...
