How can i disable iTunes launching?

Whenever i press the play, forward, or backward buttons on my keyboard, iTunes launches and starts to play a song! That's very annoying when you're watching a movie on vlc or mplayerx and all of a sudden iTunes decides to jam out.
Any tips on how to disable iTunes from launching?

Try the latest version of vlc? I believe there was a media key conflict that's been fixed.

I was just using vlc as an example. with no other apps open, i can press play, and iTunes opens and starts playing music.

If you go into iTunes and leave it on the iTunes store page, not your library, then it should sort it out.

That'll work perfectly! it's kind of a shame that the option i'm looking for isn't available to me without using a installer like this, oh well. does anyone know if Lion does the same thing for your media keys?
