I have been given an early 2013 13" MBP to try to fix, but not sure what to try next.
The problem with it is that it does boot up to the login screen after about 5 minutes, but the fans are going at full speed. You can log in eventually and maybe run terminal to see that kernel_task is running away with all the CPU. Its a bit aggravating that it does work, just very slowly.
At some point it has had a very small amount of coffee spilled on the left side of the keyboard, and as a result of this, some of the keys don't work properly or at all. I've been unable to reset PRAM or SMC from the keyboard because the left hand shift, cmd and option dont work correctly or at all, its hard to tell. I have tried both an external USB keyboard/mouse and a bluetooth keyboard instead, and when you eventually get logged in, these work, but it does not seem possible to use these external keyboards to reset PRAM or effect a safe boot, for example.
I've had the machine open and got as far as getting the logic board out completely. It looks fine to my untrained eye - no sign of any corrosion or liquid entry whatsoever. I did not wish to remove the glued in battery, and unfortunately much of the keyboard is under the battery, behind the stuck down plastic sheet.
Should an external keyboard work right at power on, or is there a way to force PRAM or SMC resets from the terminal? The next stop for this machine is the trash, so if there are any other ideas, I'd love to hear them, thank you and sorry for rambling.
